How many dealers also collect?

BarryBarry Posts: 10,100 ✭✭✭
In another thread, the question was raised "does your dealer ever show you his personal collection."
I know some dealers maintain their own collections, and others just consider it their business. Any dealers care to comment on their own behalf, or their thoughts about dealers in general?

I don't think I could be a full time dealer and still be a collector. There would be too many that I wouldn't want to let go. I just discovered this with a coin I sold on eBay. I started feeling all kind's of seller's remorse about it as soon as I shipped it off. In this case, I got lucky because the buyer decided they didn't want it after they got it, so it's on it's way back to it's rightful home.image

  • It's my understanding that dealers sometimes see the same coins over and over again. So in that sense, it's not really "goodby forever" when they sell a coin.

I'm still an active collector, but I've got a lot of what I want so I can easily say "NO" to lots of things.

And, yes, I sell a lot of the coins and tokens that are better than the pieces I have in my collection.
Retired dealer and avid collector of U.S. type coins, 19th century presidential campaign medalets and selected medals. In recent years I have been working on a set of British coins - at least one coin from each king or queen who issued pieces that are collectible. I am also collecting at least one coin for each Roman emperor from Julius Caesar to ... ?
