PCGS holder types

If you were at a coin show and you saw 3 equally nice 1921 PCGS MS65 Morgan Dollars; one in a first generation "rattler" holder, one in a "green label" holder and one in a modern/current blue label holder would you have a preference for one of the 3 types of holders or wouldn't it matter?
FWIW one dealer told me most folks don't care one way or the other.

  • All things being equal I would take the newest holder. That is what I have the most of.
  • If all of the coin were equal (remember buy the coin not the holder), I would probably buy the first generation one because some collectors think that the grading was more conservative at that time. The only thing I don't like about the first generation one is that some coins really rattle inside of them. I like the look of the new holder and I might be inclined to buy that one too.

But I must agree, if the coins are all the same quality, the holder probably won't matter and its then a personal decision.

if I were at a show and the coin wasn't for a registry set I'ld go look for the same coin Raw. pcgs is the best thing going for buying on line sight unseen but at a slow I pick raw coins all day long.

I personally like the green label. Not sure why, I just do.

I love those old "rattlers", I do agree that they were on the whole, more conservatively graded.
Those holders also bring back alot of memories for me.

All things being equal I would get the 1st generation one.

Of course then I would complain for the next X months as the slab wouldn't fit as well in my PCGS box. image

I have no preference for holder types. If I saw that the coins were substantially the same, I'd get a newer holder because it'll fit in the box better. If I am going to resell it, I might go for the rattler so that some newbie would think he could upgrade off of it and buy it at a premium. image

I would get the second generation holder. It is not too new for problems to develop as any problems would have developed by now. I don't like the old rattlers as they don't fit in the box too well.
