What's wrong with this seated dime?

The face is very odd looking, especially around the eye. Tooled or something else? link

  • Looks ok to me.
That black spot for an eyeball is probably dirt.

I was thinking that the front looks Proof (the rim is really well defined) but the back doesn't look like it belongs to the same coin.

    Overall, I like it.

It looks ok to me. It looks like she took a little hit on the shoulder. I bet the price really goes up before the auction ends.

Nothing is wrong with this coin from what I can see. Despite the grace of Ms. Liberty’s figure, her face on the no stars dimes and half dimes was rather strange looking. Perhaps Gobrecht was the opposite of the Gilbert Stuart who painted the portrait of Washington that appears on the one dollar bill.

Stuart was great at painting faces, but when he got below the shoulders sometimes he got into trouble. Perhaps Gobrecht was great with the human body but had trouble with faces, especially on the smaller coins. The Ms. Liberty on his dollar had an attractive face.

  • Perhaps it is because this is a no stars issue. You are used to seeing stars on the obverse.

Yes, this coin is a business strike, and I think it was cleaned with baking soda years ago. The accounts for the many hairlines in the fields. Still I'd give it an EF just has the consignor has done.

BTW the No Stars dime is many times scarcer than the No Stars half dime in EF or better.

Once harshly cleaned and retoned somewhat since. Certainly no original coin unless you consider it "untouched" since it's last cleaning. VF35 in my opinion and net graded lower. Not that hard to find in any grade one desires. Plenty of UNC's around too.

Is it possible that someone years ago decided to dress the coin up a little bit and intentionally drilled a small hole or something to "give" Ms. Liberty an eyeball? It's placement seems to me to be too perfect on such a nice coin to be a random piece of dirt.

She looks like she has mumps and her eyeball is fixin to pop out of her head. I see small scratches. Possible cleaning.
The only eBay coin I ever returned was to that seller.
Change that we can believe in is that change which is 90% silver.

The only advice I can give you is this,

follow your instincts. When in doubt, PASS.

Tomorrow will bring another and perhaps

better example of the coin you want.

  • There are always thousands and thousands of coins on eBay. This one's a "pass". She really does look like her eyes are a tad large.

  • image EWWWWWWWWWWWWWW... 1st, his grading is way off... I would call that a VF35. 2ndly, he/she does not disclose the problems w/ the coin, ie cleaned, and pitted and just srtaight up nasty! Now there is one thing going for the coin, atleast for me, it has a later die state crack on her rim at 5o'clock that I would be interested in, but not for that price. Id pass on the piece
