if it were a quarter on half it would for sure be a f to vf. but a 1/2 dime the size makes 1/2 dimes grade better. I say xf to au on this one.

F-12 looks right to me, maybe a little more. The surface coloration is something that would keep me from buying it.

I sure would like to buy coins from the guys calling this one a fine.

Coin looks like a solid VF to me.

The reverse looks like F-15+ but the obverse is F-12 IMHO.

I would not pay VF money for this coin (because I don't think it is VF) image

    VF-20, no plus.

  • To me it is a Fine-15 coin but a very nice one. I would probably be willing to pay twenty money for it if I was buying it for my collection. If I was thinking of turning it I would be trying to buy it as a 15.
  • ttt, this one's getting grades all over the place! I'm thinking F-15 myself.

Yes the center portion of this coin looks like a Fine-15, but if you look at the stars, you will see that all of them have their centers and most of them have their radial lines. These coins do not show that detail that sharply when they have been worn down to Fine-15. I think we are looking at a die failure here that makes the coin look worse than it is. In truth the coin may rate a + on the VF-20 grade by technical grade. But for the market, this coin nets down to VF-20 because of the strike, and that justifies the grade.

  • I go VF-20 with a weak strike on the drapery line across the bust (stars and eagle are great); however, aren't we overlooking that the coin's been dipped? Doesn't that make it a F - 12 or 15 net?

In grades like this, dipped does not matter unless the coin has excessive hairlines or is an ugly pasty white.
