Been away for a few months...what's hot these days?

I've been busy trying to restore a car and have been away (literally) from the world of coins for about 6 months. Has anything changed in the marketplace? What's hot these days? When I left, it was early silver dollars, the recently released buffalo dollar, and (not sure why) high grade PCGS registry material. Has anything changed?

    Anything in a PR70 holder.

Buffalo nickels, if the recent Bowers auction is any indication. A largee number sold in excess of $20K, even a common-date 1938-D with an uncommon MS68 grade. The recent rise in gold has affected all gold coins - the increases seem disproportionately high compared to the bullion bump, so it must have drawn some incremental collector interest.

  • Registry is still the "in" thing and maybe not as intense as it was. Anything toned is talked about, real or AT, and is a hot topic the last 3 or 4 weeks. Morgans, Peace, and Franklins are favorite toning topics ( Make sure you post pictures if you discuss it if possible ). Still the same old " ACG is crap " threads every once in awhile.

if the PCGS homepage is any indication, the entire market is WHITE HOT - hot as the sun. the other day my local coin store burst into flames - luckily i was thrown free. my coin dealer's head melted while i was talking to him vis-a-vis the cheap special effects of "raiders of the lost ark". i then grabbed the coin, searing my flesh, leaving a permanent coin-scar on my palm as shown in the same film.

the only thing that remains to be seen is if the new PCGS superlatives can keep outdoing the previous ones.

  • - A spotty "PR70" common date Lincoln sold for enough to buy 2 or 3 typical classic cars.
    - Rick Montgomery left and Q David Bowers was fired from CU.
    - Virtually every weekend was filled with numerous threads arguing about some deal gone bad.
    - There were 172 threads debating the merits of modern vs. classic coins.
    - Surprisingly, there were fewer than usual threads debating brillinat vs. toned coins.

    That's about it.
  • I never did put too much stock in what the dealers say. Whatever is hot to them is whatever they are overstocked with!

Now that's funny! As someone once said "Dying's easy, comedy is hard."
    Thanks, Baccaruda.
