Guess the grade, Charlotte gold (1838-c)

While at a convention this weekend i won a new camera and am having a bit of a problem with taking decent coin pictures, but with some practice i hope i'll get better. Is there any way to get around the 50k attachment upload limit? Anyway, here's my half eagle, tell me what you think:

Well that picture is tough, but I'll say EF40

It's an xf-40, so I guess segs had it right on. All the marks on it are definitly detacting, but for being so hard to come by, i picked it up from my dealer as soon as i saw that he had one. And the coin does look better in person without all that light on it.

Can I do a 'guess the grade' of a raw coin?

I'm surprised the surfaces are so rough. I have heard that the D and C gold mints were pretty primitive, but I wonder what an uncirculated coin would look like!

I'm going to go w/ XF too. Maybe XF45. It looks like it may have been cleaned.
