Has anyone had trouble with keeping coin in safety deposit boxes !!!

Hello,
About a month ago I put my coin collection in a safe deposit box at my local bank, when I
went in the vault it felt muggy, or a little cold. I've been worring ever since.
Would be curious if anyone has had any problems !!!!!!!!!

My bank vault is humidity controlled. I keep a whole lot of silica gel in my safe deposit boxes. Also use intercept shields.
Some refer to overgraded slabs as Coffins. I like to think of them as Happy Coins.

Most banks built within the past 15 years keep their vaults humid through the use of humidifiers. The rationale is that documents will not become brittle in a humid environment. This is bad news for coins. I don't know if silica gel alone is enough protection. I can't speak for Intercept Shield. The combination may be enough. I would suggest that you find an older bank that does not humidify their vault.

I've kept my coins in various banks for many years and have never had
a problem. One bank is in a flood plain and the vault is in the basement
so I always drive by after a rain.

Also, a recently build bank will have more humidity naturally. This is because it typically takes several years for the cement used to actually finish drying out. Thankfully, my bank keeps it arid in the safe. But silica gel is a necessity oftentimes.

  • If you like keeping your coins at the bank for long periods of time, try investing in a vacum sealer. Toss a silica pack in there for good measure.

I recently, last 2 months, move some of my coins into a safety deposit box and they have already started to tone. Nice rainbows, unfortunately it's happening to circ. mercs, barbers and buffalos. So there might be some hazard with storing high end blast white coins, if that's how you want to keep them.

  • I have had my collection in the same safety deposit box for several years and none of my brilliant coins have started to tone yet.

Fortunately I live in a very dry climate. I know that having my coins in a bank vault buys me a great deal of piece of mind.

I have my slabs in Intercept Shields. I kind of wonder if they are really all that great because they aren't environmentally secure by any means.
