Chelmsford Ma. coin show

Went to a small local show today and ended up meeting BigD5 and Outhaul. Very nice to meet them. They were outside in the lobby talking coins when I went to introduce myself. Always good to put a face to a handle.

The show was very quiet, Word was that about 1/3 of the dealers had gone to Hartford Conn. to a show. Most of the crowd must have gone with them. It was very quiet. I did manage to pick up a nice envolope toned 1903 Morgan in a PCGS65 holder. Nice coin, not monster but better than your average run of the mill toned piece. The dealer said he had just picked it up last weekend in Houston. Bought it right at Alittle over ask. No premium at all. All in all not a bad trip.

Gold is still being sought out by a lot of the people in attendance.image

Does Chelmsford have the same dealers as Nashua, or a different lot? I always make Nashua, but haven't ever done Chelmsford, figuring it was probably the same guys (plus the Mass sales tax!).

The majority of the dealers are the same. There are a few that are different

The Hartford, CT show was indeed very busy today. The amount of public attendance was quite encouraging. Some dealers who I hadn't seen at the show for years were walking the floor. Any decent slabbed MS63/64 $20 gold piece didn't stay unsold for long.
Not sure what the average guy was buying but I don't think it was
multi-hundred dollar coins. Probably state quarter rolls, 20th century circs, common dollars in 63 to 65, silver eagles, etc.

I saw a decent proof 65 cameo NM quarter (PCGS) but just a bit too much money right now. I think gold fever was pulling in the guy off the street.

    Hey!

It was nice meeting Jack (Toneddollars) and seeing Darin (BigD5) again at the Chelmsford show today. Jack's Morgan is a BEAUT! Darin had a few nice pieces with him, but jest a tad too spendy for me right now as I just picked up a Gettysburg, Lynchburg, and Elgin all in 1st generation PCGS MS-65 holders.

ms71 - The same faces from Nashua are at Chelmsford. We're all going to have to hook up at the next show.

    Cheers,

As Toneddollars said, it is nice to put a face with some of the names on the board. His Morgan was indeed nice, especially for the price!
I found a few goodies once we finally broke up the banter and headed into the show. I passed on a couple of coins, that I may regret later. Too much risk and not enough reward with them I guess. One of them was an older half cent that I've been looking for.
The show was a bit smaller than usual because quite a few dealers chose to head down to the Hartford Conn. show. It was a bit busier after Toneddollars left, not much, but a little bit more. I'll ditto the "gold fever" comments. Lots of dealers and collectors looking for gold. Seemed like ms/63+ stuff was in the highest demand. I'm not a gold guy, so I didn't pay much attention to it.
It was a pleasure meeting Toneddollars, and hooking up with Outhaul once again.

  • I was there sunday also. I'm surprised that there were any board members there. It's a pretty small show. It was my third time there but the first time that I actually found something I was looking for. I picked up a couple of nice type-I and type-II trimes (1851-o and 1854) for my type set. Guess I'm going to have to make it out to the next show.

I had a pretty good show a Chelmsford although most of my business was with other dealers. I know Toned Dollars and BigD well and have done business with them in the past. I also met Outhaul yesterday. I would like to meet more of you. I'm always located in the back of the room to the right of the coffee pot as you face the back wall. Unfortunatley the next show will not be until April.

Next Sunday is Nashua, which for me is my best one day show. There are a lot of "real" collectors who come there to buy "real" coins. Not stuff like gold plated state quarters and state quarter rolls. Come on guys! Do you really think that stuff is going to be worth anything in the future? Heck it doesn't even have any bullion value to put a floor under it!

In recent years I have been working on a set of British coins - at least one coin from each king or queen who issued pieces that are collectible. I am also collecting at least one coin for each Roman emperor from Julius Caesar to ... ?

The Chelmsford show has been getting better and better for the last year or so. It's much bigger than it used to be. This past Sunday's show was the smallest in a while, but again, there was another show in the Hartford area, and quite a few of the dealers from southern Ma. and Conn. decided to head to that show.
If you head to the show, I recommend stopping at Bill's table. He always has AT LEAST a half a dozen jaw droppers.

I'm often found hanging around Bill's table at Nashua. He is a straight shooter, has a great eye, and has found me several terrific gold coins over the past year or so. A "collector's dealer", a guy who makes it worthwhile to make the trip.
