Let's all find out who ACG is suing and let's get some money together for them.

Let's all find out who ACG is suing and let's get some money together for them.

Why not? We all want what's best for the hobby. Wouldn't it be cool if the defendant got a fair hearing in front of a jury as opposed to
getting slammed because he got outspent?

I'm good for $500. Will anyone else join me?

If Adrian offers to kick in one of his top-of-the-line coins, I'll send nasty emails about AGC to everybody and become the defendant.image

  • Count me in too. I think this is an excellent idea!

I've also wondered if we should ALL go buy something from the dealers named after we know who they are. I know I will!

About the only thing that can fix ACG would be a story on “60 Minutes.” They did one on the Franklin Mint many years ago, and that put big nail in their coin and medal business coffin.

  • Whats that about the Franklin Mint? I still have many of their coin sets. I think they're nice looking coins. I know they'll never be worth much, but are still nice.

    dimetime -

i'm not saying there's anything wrong with the franklin mint, i have no opinion on the matter - i just want to know where their bad press came from and why.

I can contribute as well, depending on finances at the time of need. However, I would NOT be concerned about being outspent by ACG. I think that their business has really tanked lately. Also, I am confident that ACG charged very little for some mass submissions by their main ACG dealers in the past. Point is that I don't think he got $10 per slab on the vast majority of the slabs out there.

Here's some evidence to support my theory: do you guys recall that huge, whopping $2,000 check (or was it $3K) that ACG gave to the ANA? Remember the photo opp with the ANA dudes wearing wigs? That's not exactly a major donation worthy of a photo opp.
  • Geez! Some of you guys are putting in big bucks! ($500... thats quite a bit more than my most expensive coin!)

  • Thank you to those who would like to help out the defendant with some money.

I'll think about how to structure it so that everyone knows the money is going to the right place. I will approach someone i know we all trust to be the receptacle of the moolah.

Which of course brings us to the next question which is, who got sued? If it's you, PM me or call me at 972-671-5050.

I'll throw a few bucks at you in Baltimore if you are going to collect it.
  • I'll pitch in what I can (depends on finances at the time of need...)

The Franklin Mint was in the business of making coins and medal. Their coin business included some circulating pieces for foreign countries and they also made Proof sets for other nations as well. These were often third world countries and I doubt that many or any of the coins ever touched the shores of the nation they represented. They were shipped straight to collectors.

Franklin Mint also produced commemorative medals for various "collectors societies" and they also had sets that they signed people up for a long term or open ended commitment. I remember they had bicentennial set of 200 medals. Each medal noted a specific event for each year of our nation’s existence. The societies had a “board of directors” and other trappings of something that was independent of the Franklin Mint, but that was just their marketing.

For the most part the time when Franklin Mint stuff had its highest value was day they sold it to the collectors. After that it was mostly all down hill. The secondary market was really weak, and about the only way people made money on Franklin Mint Stuff or at least got their money back was if it was made of silver and had a good melt value during the heady days of the Hunt brothers. One collector quipped to me during the period, “The Franklin Mint is great for lowering the inheritance tax for collectors because every new purchase lowers their net worth.”

Many Franklin Mint collectors were passionate about their collections and their value. I taught a coin collecting course at a community college, and I remember having quite a discussion with one of my students who strongly disagreed with me when I told him that he was going to lose most of his money on his Franklin Mint purchases. :You are just behind the times,” he told me. (Sound familiar when I make similar statements about high priced modern coins in slabs?)

Finally after a lot of collectors lost a lot money, “60 Minutes” did a story. They interviewed people who had Franklin Mint stuff all over their homes. And, when Mike Wallace told them what their stuff was worth relative to what they had paid, they were shocked. That was beginning of the end for the Franklin Mint’s numismatic business. The last I knew they were selling figurines, model cars and other stuff, but no coins or medals.

Thanks for the support. Kid...you're funny....and smart - i can tell.

Ok, so, now we're gonna need someone trustworthy to escrow the money until we get enought to present it. I don't want to dribble it in to the defendant. (I now know who it is and will try to reveal the ID soon.) Any suggestions? Don't list them here, PM me. I'll contact one of the nominated persons and get their acquiescence and we'll roll from there. No money will be collected until after we get someone to receive the funds.

The fund raising should not end here. Anonymous donations can be made. I will personally hit up the wealthy people who i know here on the board and elsewhere.
