NTC is Now the Preferred Grading Service

Has anyone else noticed on Ebay lately that many of the sleezy dealers that used to list ACG coins almost exclusively have now switched over to selling mainly NTC coins?

So is NTC now the grading service of choice among the bottom of the barrel dealers, or are they just cheaper than ACG on bulk submissions?

BTW........I'd be VERY careful on buying anything in an NTC slab, I've seen quite a few on Ebay that are clearly problem coins in their holders.

I think that in general collectors have become more informed on what services to watch out for and with NTC being relatively new, they haven't caught onto them just yet. Give it time though. Then another new service will start up to take over where the others have left off.

    Dragon,

I've noticed the same thing. Many more 1964 proof JFKs in NTC slabs and far fewer in ACG. The cherry-picking is good, though. In the last couple weeks I've grabbed four Accented Hairs in undesignated slabs for less than they'd have cost raw.image

Of course, now that I've said that I'll have a bunch of competition from the vultures around here.image

  • I have learned to scan the listings and pass right on by the ACG and NTC entries. Even if the finest known is in one of those slabs, I don't want to support those companies, or the dealers who push them. They're hurting my hobby, and the best way I know to "hurt back" is to refuse to own, sell, or trade any of them. As more of us do the same, they'll fly by night.

  • I thought someone on the board crossed an NTC coin at the same grade to PCGS. From what I have seen they don't seem to far off the mark but I have never actually purchased one.

    Clackamas,

In what I collect, they are literally worse than ACG when it comes to grading accuracy.

How is that possible? I didnt think you could get worse than ACGimage
  • I think NTC dosen't have that horrible reputation over the years that ACG has. Yes, they are off, but some people don't know that and people aren't as outsoken against NTC as ACG.

IMHO, the last NTC I bought was off by 5 grades (overgraded if there is any doubt) and artifically toned to cover the wear. It looked nice in the eBay scan but was quickly returned for a refund upon receipt and closer inspection.

PS: I've noticed the same trend (more NTC, less ACG). I wonder how badly NTC is hurting ACG.

  • An Ebay seller writes in his description:

<< <i>  Its nice to see a nice coin in a nice holder once in a while. Incredibly well struck 1932 Denver Washington quarter, key date of the series, with pleasing luster and great eye appeal. Certified by Numistrust MS64, and usual for them, I would have to say conservatively so. So before you shell out $3,250.00, the Coin World US Coin Trends value for MS64, for another coin not near as nice, maybe you should learn about NTC. Remember , it better to buy coins that plastic !

NTC ? Who is NTC you might ask ? I heard of NGC, and PCGS, ANACS, SEGS, but who is NTC ? Well, they are only the ones who engineered the most attractive and durable coin holder in the market. The Numistrust Corporation is a new player, that prides itself on conservative grading. There mission is to take the uncertainty out of third party grading by providing a safe and stable grading standard for the public to rely and trust in. From what I have seen they have done a fine job at it. You can learn more about them at www.numistrust.com. >>

It seems some Ebay sellers are not only selling NTC coins, but promoting the company as well! image

We are finite beings, limited in all our powers, and, hence, our conclusions are not only relative, but they should ever be held subject to correction. Positive assurance is unattainable. The dogmatist is the only one who claims to possess absolute certainty.

They didn't do a lot of thinking when they picked their name...have already seen folks focus on "nu-mistrust"

You know, Russ, if you keep getting these accented hairs certified, you're going to lower the price for the rest of us! image
