Has anyone delt with HLRC?

I saw his ad in NN and he's got a coin or two i'm interested in has anyone ever bought from him? In his ad he has an interesting way to grade coins. Most are slabbed but he gives them a # 1-4 1 is a white coin and 4 is lots of toning. link

I am sure that he wants satisfied customers. You should have a limited return policy, perhaps a week or two. He is a PNG member. There should be no problems whatsoever.image
PNG member, numismatic dealer since 1965. Operates a retail store, also has exhibited at over 1000 shows.
I firmly believe in numismatics as the world's greatest hobby, but recognize that this is a luxury and without collectors, we can all spend/melt our collections/inventories.

I've purchased a number of coins from HLRC. His prices are a little high, but the service is really good, and the coins were real nice. No complaints here.
  • It looks like he has some super coins. Several for sale below GS bid...

I like Harry Laibstain's outfit. I find him to be very nice as well as ethical. His employees conduct themselves by his example. I like John Noonan as well. While John isn't nearly as knowledgeable as Harry, he does conduct himself in accordance with the tone that Harry has set.

As for their prices, I actually find most of their prices to be quite reasonable. They are always willing to negotiate, but I wouldn't bother trying to lowball them. They don't know this, but I would have bought more coins from them over the years if I actually had more to spend.

Bought three nice coins from him: Arkansas Commem/Grant w/Star and 1936 PF Nickel. All great coins. Great service.

  • Here is a link to a thread from a few months ago about Harry Laibstain. The response was overwhelmingly positive. I think that says a lot.

  • Sold him about 8 coins at summer Long Beach show at about 5% back of bid, mostly common mgc/pcgs 64-65 commems and generic gold. Thats better than the other dealers offered.

When I was looking for a 1796 quarter for my 18th century type set, I was outbid in an auction about 6 months ago. As I recall, closing price was about 9K. The coin appeared at HLRC shortly thereafter for 12.5K. Not that I want to start another dealer markup thread...

i admit to testing this only maybe 3 times or so w/ laibstain in particular, but any coin i've ever considered buying from him sight-seen, i have found elsewhere at significant savings. it may take more time to look , but to me, it's worth saving 30%

I bought a couple of coins, including my icon from him. Yes, his prices are high, but I like his stuff.

I've bought several coins from him. One standout was an MS66PL Morgan for $145!
Give Blood (Red Bags) & Platelets (Yellow Bags)!
  • Its about the same for him or any other dealer. Nice coins at a fair price and a respectable profit for him. Now if its a common coin and you want to spend the time looking you can almost always do better from another collector than from a dealer. But as far as dealers go you get return privs and other benefits and as far as HLRC, hes as good as any other.

I'm looking for a Proof Mercury (winged liberty) dime. I don't want to spend alot but i don't want a butt ugly coin. I was hoping to get one in the $150 range but i've never priced them so i don't know if that is a decent price or not. It dosn't have to be a PF-66 or 67 but it does have to have good eye appeal. The one i saw on his site was a nice white PF-64

anyone have a coin to sell

BTW you might put it on the buy, sell, tradeboard
    Wanted, PR6X Mercury
  • I live in the Norfolk area, and his shop in downtown Norfolk is pretty nifty. As everyone else has said, his prives are a spot or two higher than most, but the caliber and selection are one of the better in this business. If you like it, you should get it.
  • Harry Laibstain is a fine upstanding dealer with the respect of his peers. He does buy high end coins and actually offers an eye appeal system for his coins. He'll treat you fairly for sure.

Harry is a good guy. I've bought several of my $10 Indians from him.

  • I`ve dealt with them once without any problems. There`s a couple of coins that I have my eye on that I`m considering on getting from them right now.
