Does anyone use a Fujifilm or Olympus Digicam?

Hi,

I even searched before asking this question imageimage Does anyone use a Fijifilm FinePix3800 or an Olympus Camedia 4000?

I have found both for under $330, new and in-the-box. Both have strong optical zooms (one is equivalent to 224mm!), large image sizes, features galore, and (I think) the ability to add extra lenses with an attachment... let's not forget the .7" macros.

My mom wants me to get a camera that is new, as opposed to a used one on eBay, thus it may be hard to get a Ricoh like Russ has, or possibly the newer models (like the 5000)- the two above look like great, all-around cameras and I want to know if you have any opinions on either/or, or if you know of similar cameras in a similar price bracket ($400 or less, if possible) that I may want to look into... examples are welcome!!!

Jeremy

PS- A public thanks to Russ for all of his help on the Ricoh 4300 which he has image

  • Jeremy-- I have a Fuji Finepix 3800 and I really like it. It is light, easy to use, and has very good macro capabilities. Here is a picture taken with it. I have not even experimented yet with getting a tripod and trying to eliminate my shaking hands from the equation. So far, I can heartily recommend this camera.

  • I use the Olympus Camedia C-4000 Zoom. I just love it. It has a excellent macro capability of .7". I have not found the right lighting to get super great pictures but you can click on the links in my signature to see photos taken with this camera. I had the Fugi Finepix 2800z before I got this one and did not like it at all. I would recomend this camera. It has lots of great features. Hope that helped.

  • You can also do short movies with the Olympus because it has a movie mode which is neat. I think if you print out the two cameras features you will see that the Olympus has more features then the Fuji. That would sell it for me. Go to Circuit City and compare the two cameras. They have both.

Thanks for reminding me about a place that does an online comparison, Lori! I'd been looking for a while (image)

I think the Olympus sold me a little more (even though the zoom is a little less) but I will probably go to a store, check out the cameras (of course bringing a slab and raw coin to check macro), and then decided how I like them...

More opinions welcome! Also, what do you guys think of regular (non-coin/macro) shots?

  • Jeremy--
The regular shots are great with the 3800. I ended up getting the 3800 because I needed a camera that would perform well for both functions--the macro and just regular shots. I am certainly not recommending the Fuji over the Olympus. I have no experience with the Olympus. I'll just say that I am very happy with the Finepix 3800.

  • I had a 1.3 Olympus for my first digital camera. I upgraded to the Fugi FinePix. One step down the one you are looking at. I did not like the camera at all. The view finder and screen was horribly dark and forget taking pictures in the dark or even a dim lit room. You wouldn't be able to see what you were shooting through the lens. I don't know if they fixed that in the model you are looking for. So I sold it and bought another Olympus because I loved my older one. I have my digital camera for my business product photos and talking pictures of my kids. The great macro capability is just a plus. It takes excellent high quality pictures. It has many different settings for outside use and many more great features. I am just voicing my opinion because I owned both the Fugi and Olympus and I preferred the Olympus. Hope to have helped a little.
