This coin serves as an absolutely fabulous visual example / lesson of one way to assess originality of toning / color.

See how the colors blend together, gradually and unevenly in some areas, as if an artist (a real artist, not a coin doctor!) had painted them on there but delicately lightened the shades, along the way, as he did so.

The bands of color are not clearly defined or uniformly distinct in all areas, as would more likely be the case with artificial / enhanced color. Sometimes it is difficult to explain the concept, but this coin does it on its own.

baccaruda, I don't want to hijack your thread, but with your permission, I'd like to start another one about this coin and what a great learning tool it is for helping to determine natural vs. artificial color. I would post a link to your thread, in doing so. However, I will not start another thread unless you give the ok. Either way - thanks.

TRUTH- The day will come, soon, that we'll look back on this one at $450.00 and wonder how it sold so cheap!

Actually, I bet this one will close out at near twice it's current price.

that is one real looking dollar.
if it is not real, the whoever did it has perfected the craft and coins that look like this will someday flood the market like a dozen bags of 1903-O's in the sixties. Then again, a clever counterfeiter might slab and dish em out a few at a time, so as not to spook the market for this stuff
now that we consider it, doesn't it seem like there are a lot more monster bag toned morgans than there used to be? buyer of this type of material and hypergrade moderns faces same risk of rare now, maybe a lot more get slabbed someday diluting the scarcity somewhat.
either way, great looking dollar, and imo worth about what he's got the reserve at.

  • I ,too, agree with this coin having real toning. Price might even triple

One thing is certain about the availability of specimens... When the market wants to buy them, people will go find them to sell. I don't think a great deal of toned coins are super rare (although there are some which are so spectacular that they are a great rarity) but have a rarity similar to DMPL morgans. They're certainly all around but are still actually rare.

*The preceding opinion is based on opinion and not an actual scientific census of available coins, merely an interesting speculation on one possible solution to the problem of toned coin availability. Any further conclusions, either expressed or implied, are disclaimed unless they're favorable or profitable to me.

A nice example of true mint bag rainbow.
If It doesn't have great eye appeal, I don't want it.
  • Wow, gorgeous Morgan!
