I guess PCGS messed up on this one or i need to take better pictures. the coin is graded PCGS MS-66, it has light gold toning. It really does look nice.
I'm not surprised. The reason I said MS65 is because I have the same coin in a PCGS holder with monster toning and literally two tiny tics not in the prime focal areas that can only be seen with magnification and they gave it a 65. It will be resubmitted and I fully expect a 2 point upgrade. I will ask them to please study this coin with strong magnification and not to just give it the "once over" like they obviously did the first time. Hopefully they will take a few extra seconds to do that.
Where do you come up with crazy grading? That coin from the picture is most certainly not anything lower than 65. The chatter on the jaw is die chatter and since there are no other significant marks on the coin I am not surprized whatsoever that its an MS66. Saying that coin is no higher than a 64 is just downright dumb.
I guess I can't grade nickels worth a dang. I was treating like a Morgan and thought the gouge above the eye on the forehead and the gouges on the cheek into the hair would hold it back.

I guess that is why he's calling himself DORKkarl.
mbbiker Congrats to you! If the coin was resubmited, are you confident it would come back the same grade? I see too many marks, 4-5 on the obverse, but the toning, strike and luster may be what's compensating the MS66 grade. A dealer or whoever plays the odds, will resubmit until he hits the jackpot, this is why the pops are all screwed up. If you have doubts for a MS67 grade then consider yourself fortunate. Nice coin.

The more qualities observed in a coin, the more desirable that coin becomes!
I don't think this coin has a chance at a 67. There are a few to many hits but the luster is booming when you hold it. If you hold it right it almost looks like it has mirrors.

that's right, DORKkarl, not DUMBkarl!

calm down, dude! if marks were the only thing grades were based on, i'd be rich! in your particular image, that coin has average luster, the obvious scuffs on the lower jawbone (which is NOT "die-chatter", it is post-minting abrasion), a very average strike, & a couple of hairline scratches on the rev. that, to me, means ms-64!
i am dead serious, if that coin is ms-66, then i might have the "pop-top" '38-d. but again, i don't have the advantage that you do of viewing the luster.

I can't grade nickels and can't even see the steps, but he did cut himself shaving so I'm going to give it a 65
