Coins with Holes

Hello --

I just bought a set of twenty 'coins with holes' from The Coin Depot. They are all silver dollars -- Morgan and Peace. The price was $100 (shipping incl.) or $5 per coin. I got these as trades with my students -- many of whom are international, and knowing I am collector, they bring me coins from time to time. I don't like taking student gifts, so I try to have some cheap-o traders in my office. I really did not want these for my own collection.

Here's the funny part: Coin Depot sent twenty-one coins, not twenty, and eleven of them have no holes -- they are simply very very worn. Actually, I don't mind. They will serve my purpose just fine; I can give either a really worn or hole coin to my students as trades and ponder: "I wonder where this one has been?". Or I can splash them out on my desk and have the student pick one. Should be fun.

In case you would like to see the set, click here for the obverses and here for the reverses. Some of them are really worn -- below P01, I think!! "P0.5?"

It is not exactly cheating, I prefer to consider it creative problem solving!!!

  • Yeah -- I saw that. Too bad they drilled out the mint mark. image

1 of those peace dollars is counterfeit!

it seems that the vendor considers holed coins w/ detail more valuable than horribly worn coins. i'd agree.

  • K S -- Yes, I agree, and if I were buying 'em for my collection, I'd be p**sed off, because the advertisement said I'd get only holed coins. But as traders and freebies for my students, these are A-OK. image

I'd demand my money back. You didn't get the junk you thought you were getting

  • Ah, I knew what I was getting into. Coin Depot is one of those outfits that NO WAY will take coins back if *their* packaging is opened. And the stack came in a roll sealed w/ strapping tape. So the simple fact of opening the roll voided the return policy. This is OK w/ me. The whole thing was a fun gamble anyway. And it helps me in my quest to become a specialist in junk.

hey mrfred, do you know "zitty" on ebay? can't remember his 1st name, but last name's "whitehead" (hence the "zitty" handle, i guess). he specializes in that material.

  • I've never seen Morgans that worn before. Kinda cool actually. And even a Peace Dollar that looks like a no-dater.
  • Yes -- one PD is definitely a no-dater. The other shows a shadow of a '4' at the end, but I can't make out if it is a '24' or a '34'.

KS - thanks for the lead on that e-bay dealer. I might check it out. This kind of material makes great door prizes.

And in any case, there is always the silver value image.

I love this collector/giveaway attitude, and think we should all do it to some degree in the interest of the hobby, i do give away lots of coins to friends and relatives who show even the slightest interest in my collection, as in have a look at this tray.... would you like to choose one? Nothing real expensive, but they usually choose a "big" coin like a worn WL or Frankie or maybe a crown size foreign, you should see the looks on some of the kids faces. Also like to spend a few wheat cents, cheap buffs and mercs once in a while and kind of, well, the reverse of , you know how when you hold a really old coin you wonder where it's been, well when you spend an obsolete coin you speculate about where it will go, who will take it back out of circulation and what will they do next, save it in a keepsake box, take it to a coin shop and either try to sell (and be dissapointed) or will maybe buy a coin or two and start a collection. I just remember that early fun of searching pocket change hoping for a find and the pure joy of actually getting something worth more than face and enjoy the thought that some kid will appreciate the coin they find.

Yes, I think you are on your way to assembling the poorest known collection of Morgan and Peace Dollars. image

Now if you could duplicate this in the "old" commeorative series, you could really get yourself on the map. Try to find an Antietam or a 1939 Oregon in no problem Good-4. Now those coins are major rarities! image
Retired dealer and avid collector of U.S. type coins, 19th century presidential campaign medalets and selected medals. In recent years I have been working on a set of British coins - at least one coin from each king or queen who issued pieces that are collectible. I am also collecting at least one coin for each Roman emperor from Julius Caesar to ... ?
  • Thanks, Bill -- Hm, maybe I will keep one or two for my own. We could start a 'RRS' trend:
'Reverse Registry Set'. Get 'em graded by ACG (no, not ACG -- they'd probably grade every coin in this batch at least at VF) or somebody and you get more points the lower your set is graded. Like Golf. Lowest score wins. We could have an Anti Grading website. Real civil disobedience stuff. Y'know. Hm.
