IMPORTANT !! Is anyone else been having trouble with viruses?

BillJonesBillJones Posts: 34,298 ✭✭✭✭✭
Over the past weeks my computer has been getting infected with Trojan viruses. Has anyone else been having a similar problem? It’s my understanding that these things can be transmitted through message boards, sometimes innocently by those who pick them up elsewhere and then have them unknowingly sent though messages. I've been able to remove the viruses that I have received, but others may not be so lucky.

Please let me know if you have had similar problems. Doing here publicly could be more effect because it could alert others. You can also send me a PM if you prefer.

I've had a lot of tries, but nothing has got through. knock on wood. I know that zone-alarm is slowing thing up a lot lately.

I've noticed that when my computer scans for viruses lately, it has found two, and I've received two or three infected emails. It did seem this was inordinately high for a one month period, as I had only seen a few viruses in the past several years.
  • The Kleg (my spelling might be wrong and there are varients) virus infects the mail messages and sends itself to everybody in ones email list. I received dozens of mails from many board members with that virus attached. Norton antivirus caught it before it did any damage to me. I know the board members were suffering and did not send me the virus on purpose.

Perhaps that has surfaced for you? Or is it something else?

I don't know the name of the virus, but the latest one I received was the one entitled "Snow White and the Seven Dwarfs." Norton has saved me every time.

Yes, I've got the Norton system too, and it's been picking this stuff up, thank goodness.

I was concerned that maybe something had gotten into CU's software. If so, we should let them know.

No problems here, and I don't have any anti-virus software installed either. Emails with attachments get deleted (if it's obviously a virus, they get blocked too) and I don't download/install suspicious software, so haven't had a need for Norton. Periodically I do use the web based version of McAffee though, just to make sure my proceedures are still working, but it hasn't found anything in years.

I cannot imagine any possible way to get infected from using this site, either by browsing the forums or via PM.

New collectors, please educate yourself before spending money on coins; there are people who believe that using numismatic knowledge to rip the naïve is what this hobby is all about.

I get between 8 and 10 viruses sent to me per day, every day. One of the hazzards of being in hundreds of address books.

Kranky is correct. If you're getting viruses, worms or trojans, you are not getting them from visiting this forum.

Haven't seen a noticable increase in the past 2 weeks.

However, I use Norton System Works, and have the anitvirus software set up to update every night around 3am. It also runs a full scan at the time. And I also have the "full-time" scanning feature turned on so any emails coming in are automatically scanned. Finally, I use BlackICE firewall protection too. With these 2 programs, I haven't had a problem or been affected by a virus in over 2 years.

I have been seeing them everyday in Email for a long time. NEVER open attachments that make it past your virus scanner Heck Never open attachments ever...... Zone alarm set correctly will help a ton. Make sure your virus def's are up to date.
There are a ton of viruses out there these days. People are sending them and don't even know it.

And to keep it on Topic Buy Morgan Dollars

<< <i>NEVER open attachments that make it past your virus scanner. >>

Most attachments never even make it to my local drive. I have my eMail client setup to leave them on the web server until I decide to either download or delete. The only thing that I ever download are price lists from suppliers. Everything else gets nuked, so if anyone wants to send me something, you better let me know ahead of time.image

My ISP has been nice enough to intercept 3 or 4. One thing I have noticed though is that my router is very busy fighting IP fragments. Klez is still pretty active, and tons of folks love to snoop public networks. Once every month or so, Norton picks up the occasional inbound email and strips it. I wonder what portion of available bandwidth gets wasted on this crap.

I get between 10 and 30 messages a day that are all viruses. A vague subject line, no body, and an attachment. I just delete them.
