Pics of 1793 Wreath Cent PCGS MS63 Eliasberg

I just got this coin yesterday.

image

image

It appears on the front and back cover of Breen's big book on Large Cents that was published last year. (It is his plate coin for the Sheldon 8.) It is also illustrated in Bower's book on Eliasberg ("Louis E. Eliasberg Sr., King of Coins") in the section on Eliasberg's most notable coins. Noyes lists it as second finest known S-8.

What's also kinda neat is that its provenance is traced back to 1909. The planchet void that appears on the reverse at 2:00ish makes the coin readily recognizable.

I like early copper. I think they're some of the coolest coins around.....although it's tough to beat a Double Eagle in NGC Proof 68 Ultra Cameo!

its an oft-plated coin, & deservedly so. shameful that it is now stuck in plastic. image sorry to keep ranting about that, but a coin of that magnitude shouldn't have it's inherent & extraordinary beauty distorted by a chunk of plastic. he11, you can't even look at the entire 3d side.

    free the coin, PLEASE!!!

Seeing a coin like that has to stir ones imagination back to Colonial days and our infant Mint. These coins were made with the crudest of tools and machinery. Some of the machinery they say was even driven by some real horsepower down in the basement. Whenever I see a picture of the first Mint at Philadelphia these are the coins that are immediately brought to my mind. A real lovely coin that I would really enjoy owning and pondering over. Congratulations Adrian!

irishmike, i'm not trying to sound like a tape-recorder. i honest-too-gawd would like to see the edge of that coin! to my knowledge, it's edge has never been plated.

  • Wow, that coin sure is a beauty, Mr. Crane.image I love the simplistic design of the coin, where as now-a-days they try to cram in everything they can possibly get in there.

Nice coin, now how about LARGE picture of the coin so we can really get a good look? The slab is nice, but I'd rather see more of the coin. Also, how about having a round-robin with the coin and letting each member of this board have it for a week?

    Adrian,
Can you share your reserve amount on this coin? Why no BIN? I know... serious inquiries can call, but I'm mighty curious.

  • This one brought $33K or so when it sold at auction a little while ago to, evidently, Spectrum, then to Anaconda.

I'm guessing that the first $40K takes it -

  • Reserve is 39500. I'm not sure why i didn't put a buy it now price on it. It might have been that i thought if it didn't reach reserve, i'd raise the price and just mentally be prepared to own it for a while. But then again, it was late at night and who knows what i was thinking. Sometimes i re-read stuff i've written and done and....well......you know, how it goes.
