So... I find out that dear old dad had among other things a 1909 S VDB.. pretty good, no, darn good condition. Even has mint luster on the Obverse. I send it away to PCGS, it comes back in a very pretty body bag - 'cleaned'.

Double argguuhhh... I send it to NCC in the hopes that they can cure the evil, denounce the demons and otherwise get this most probable AU58 coin to past muster. No go - see the scans below...

You will be able to sell if for a little more now that it has been "authenticated" and is not raw. Yes, it has been cleaned, but people can now be assured it is real if you sell on ebay.

I don't know of any way to rescue a cleaned copper coin short of circulating it further.

By the way, I said this was the second heartbreak of the day. The first was the 1909S Indian posted earlier tonight... forged mint mark...
