Wouldn't it be cool if every coin listed in the PCGS Registry set could only appear as a listed coin in a set if a photo accompanied it?

That would do several things for us, the collecting and dealer community.

First of all, it would help show to beginners how incredibly beautiful our coinage can be - a photo is impressive...

image

...simply listing a coin as "Albany in NGC MS 68" isn't impressive. (And yes, i know ngc coins aren't allowed in the PCGS registry set....yet....and lets please not get off on that tangent....i said please!).

Also, if Joe Blow has the number one set but his coins look like crap, and Sally Sue has the number two set and her coins are totally awesome.....well....that says something too, but you can't tell by looking at listings and yes, i know, some photos are up but the header here said the photo is a prerequisite......

Additionally, dealers who sell inserts first and foremost (and who cares what the coin looks like!) could know who their target audience is (guys who have ugly but highly graded coins) and dealers who sell good coins (Stay! Roll over! Good coin!) could know who might want their inventory list.

Of course their are other benefits, but i have to go now!

  • I firmly believe that coins should be accompanied by pictures. Otherwise, we are promoting the plastic. I try to keep my sets at a 100% photographed level, and actually spent most of the weekend redoing a lot of my toned photos.

PCGS would go far by adding a photo service for a small fee and then posting those photos for those who do not have the ability to do so.

Too many people would complain that they don't have access to getting their coins photographed.

    However, I like the idea.

And while we are at it, I'd like to have all non-viewable sets removed from the rankings. The purpose of the registry was to showcase your coins. This defeats the purpose.

Not a bad suggestion but impossible. There would have to be strict photographic quality control by a entity such as PCGS, adding to the cost of certification. Then, as Pushkin says, photoshop can go along ways towards enhancing coin images. I've posted all my coins with pics but, after seeing the showdown, that is the only real way to compare coins.

A really bad idea just got a lot worse.

Pushkin, I would like to show(case) you my stunning set.

Pretty amazing set. Right? Come on, this is blander than sh*t. If someone wants to use the registry, then they should have to reveal what is in their set.

Two of them are overgraded, though. And the toning on that color one is probably AT.

  • Pictures are good, I hate trying to look at the top registry set, and not having anything to look at. It should definately be required.

I think it should be optional as it is now. However, you can use you judgement on the quality of a set by other factors. Some people don't have cameras, some people like to add descriptions, and others simply list the coin. I photograph my Merc set, and I only have a few others in which I have photographed.

What makes this country great is the right to decide for yourself what you want to do.

I love to see photos of other's coins and I wish more people would show photos of their coins, but required is simply not necessary.

One other thought occured to me. PCGS could make some serious money by returning a picture with each graded coin. They could have a standard setup where the coin, lights and camera are all in place and they only have to drop in the coin, take the picture and record the output. It is a simple production line process they could charge and extra couple of bucks for. Most of us would pay that in order to get a quality shot of some of our more pricy submissions.

If you think that would work, your not into coin photography. It would end up looking like a catalog - which is why one still has to travel to the auctions to evaluate the coins.

Now if you would let me take the pics at $10/pop, I'd be all for it!image

I have redone the pictures in my set three times, usually taking eight hours, and people still say some of the coins are ugly. So whats the sense of it being required. Some just like to show off more that others. Pictures, yes they are nice. Required, No need for that.
