Coin shows: cash, check, or charge?

nwcsnwcs Posts: 13,386 ✭✭✭
When you go to a coin show, do you pay with cash, check, or charge? Do you find sellers reluctant to take out-of-state checks (which is likely for larger shows)? Do any sellers at shows take credit cards? Or is it mostly a cash transaction?

Yikes, I can see why coin people would be targets for thieves! Carrying around hundreds to many thousands in cash to another city while wandering around the bourse area...
  • but if you are a dealer and buying from the "public" they will give you a check

yep, we stroll around the bourse floor, briefcase of slabs handcuffed to left wrist, big wad of $100s in right front pocket, packing heat in a shoulder holster under our jacket...

well, maybe not "we" but you know some do, you know the type image

Cash. I'm not too worried about thieves because I look like a bum. Matter of fact, I look so bad the security guards at these shows always follow me around and keep an eye on me.image

Cash is a much better negotiating tool than any other payment form. It's much easier to put exactly what you're willing to pay for a coin in your pocket, pull it out count it in front of the dealer and say "damn, all I have left is $xxx.xx! I'd love to buy it, but I guess I spent too much today." Can't do that with a credit card or a checkbook.

    Dave,

Actually, you'd be surprised how often that works. It's particularly effective for coins you scope out early in the day that they still have toward the end of the day or the next day.image Now, I'm not talking expensive hot material, of course, but stuff like this:

    image

First day he started at $45, got him down to $38, said I'd think about it. Back the next day, he still had it. Pulled out the $35 I wanted to get it for, said that was all I had left and he sold it to me.image

Dealer to dealer transactions are almost always by check. Some dealers actually don't want cash due to the risks.

It is a bit more problematic for collectors. I'll typically accept a check from a collector if he can provide a few references and a driver's licence. I haven't been burned yet although to be honest with you, there's a certain 'gut feel' involved in the process. I've also accepted American Express traveler's checks.

Finally, I will accept cash if the collector has a good reference................like Benjamin Franklin.image

Ah yes, the old swap-meet, garage sale tactic. You're right though, it can and does work.image

Cash - I've had more dealers give me a better deal when dealing with cash.

  • I don't take a lot of cash with me to shows, but will usually take a couple of sellable coins. If I see something I like, I'll start shedding my sales material until I have enough cash to buy the coin, or if it is a dealer that I already have a working relationship with, I'll ask them to hold the coin for me until I can send them a check or money order. For bigger ticket items at shows that are moving slow, that will work, especially if you can put a down payment of some kind down on the coin. And many times, I've seen something I liked, told the dealer I wanted it, and went and found a branch of my bank to get some cash out, then come back and made the purchase.

I've been to a few shows recently, I would bring cash and a couple checks with me. I have been surprised that dealers that don't even know me when I ask if they will take my check and they are glad to accept it.

Maybe I look honestimage but I try the check first to save cash if someone won't take the check and doesn't think I look honest.

Cash and coins! Some Dealers enjoy the art of trading and wheeling-dealing.

I will take my duplicates or coins I am no longer interested in and instead of selling will trade. I believe you receive more value in trading then simply selling, plus it's fun.

It's one area I wish we had more of. Over on the Buy/ Sell/ TRADE board I see very little in the way of trades!

Last time I went to the big Knoxville show (two years ago), walked in with nothing but $25 and $50 gold eagles in my pocket image I didn't have any problems... but ended up writing a check anyways image Think I'm gonna hit the show Friday morning, only live a couple miles away.

I have actually used all three methods of payment, sometimes at the same show. Up to the dealer.

However, I do find that you can usually get a better price if you pay with CASH. image

I'm going to try to be at the Knoxville show on Saturday. Can't make it Friday. Hopefully the good stuff won't be gone. Also, they're moving the regular one fro the Days Inn to another in the area, but I cannot remember where.

Cash, Checkbook (just in case). ALWAYS get a reciept!

  • Paying cash also means no sales tax. Using a check leaves a paper trail, which means sales tax.

    Cash.

Sometimes I'll pay by check, but not often and usually it is to one of the auction companies. Dealers don't seem to like it - even the ones that you've done business with before.

I find it too much of a pain in the ass to try and trade coins. I usually get lowball offers for nice coins. Then the dealer gets pissed when I tell him I'll take his offer if he'll accept 80% back of Bluesheet for the coin I'm interested in.

Hmm, I don't like to carry cash ever. Normally I have less than $20 on me. I went to my local show and many of the dealers know me so checks were ok. I negotiate the price first, then ask if a check is ok. Are you guys ever worried about carring $1000 or more in cash?

I bring cash as sometimes it helps me get a little better deal. But, I have never, never had a dealer refuse to take my check. At a show, I'll try to preserve my cash as long as I can. If I buy something for a large amount, I'll write a check in order to preserve my cash in case I might need it to make a deal later.

But scope out the show and find the ATM first.

Dealers who know me will accept my check and give me the same pricing as with cash. I don't
bring coins to trade, because as Greg says, most offers I get for them aren't serious. The
credit card fee always gets passed on to the buyer.

Smaller dealers & dealers who don't know me prefer cash.

Tip: Check your limit re your ATM card and find out if there's an ATM you can use before you go
    to the show.

If you take cash, they'll rob you in the parking lot on your way in.

  • For a while I carried cash around and bought only through cash. However, that can be dangerous. Lately, as I've gotten to know most of the dealers in my area, I've been more prone to use checks, at least when it's over $100 or so...

Most of the time I pay with cash. Sometimes I use a check. I've only had one dealer say no to a check, his concern being the sales tax issue (and probably income tax, too).
Have you ever been to a computer show? EVERY vendor is set up to take credit cards. I don't understand the coin dealers' reluctance, but it's a rare coin dealer who will take them. I understand sales tax may be an issue here, too, but if I were a coin dealer, I'd rather have the money electronically transferred, rather than worrying about a big wad of cash all weekend.

Prefer VISA - love those frequent flyer miles. Plus, if they take VISA, it's a good clue your paying too much.
