Do you remember the first proof set that you bought directly from the mint?

I’m just curious. Are there any members old enough to have bought a proof set from the mint in the 1950's? How about the 1930's? Do you still have it? Are the coins heavily toned from the original package?

I bought my first set in 1977 (my parents paid for it, though).

I have a run of Proof Sets from 1955 todate. The first set I bought from the Mint was in 1972. Of course I still have it and the coins look pretty good. My '69 and '70 Sets that I bought at a later date do have some toning .

My first was two 1989 proof sets. Sold them at a loss last fall. In fact, the only proof sets I have that have gained value, really, are the 1999 and 2001 silver proof sets.

My grandmother gave me a 1954 proof set. That got me started. We got proof sets every year thereafter, and I still do. There is some mild toning here and there on the early coins among the ones I've checked lately, but nothing very spectacular, and no dramatic cameos.

    Dan,

I didn't do anything about buying Proof Sets directly from the mint when I was first old enough to do so. But, in the late 50's, I couldn't resist - once they included the Flying Eagle Cents (as part of the regular sets available for collectors) in "58", I had to start buying them. image

I have a 1974 that my father purchased (with my input) direct from the mint. I still have it, wouldn't part with it for anything. Also have a couple bluepack 1973 Ikes that we got from the mint. Nothing special in either of those except the memories.
  • The first thing I purchased from the mint was 5 1969 Mint sets. I still have them and they are still without toning.image

Actually my first Proof set from the mint was not a Proof set at all. It was a 1965 Special Mint Set.
Retired dealer and avid collector of U.S. type coins, 19th century presidential campaign medalets and selected medals. In recent years I have been working on a set of British coins - at least one coin from each king or queen who issued pieces that are collectible. I am also collecting at least one coin for each Roman emperor from Julius Caesar to ... ?
  • Mine were the 3 piece '76 sets. Bought 5 of each (proof and MS) with my dads credit card. Still have most of them....nothing special. Then I bought 5 of each through 81 or 82 and gave up collecting for about 17 years.
