Whats wrong with this 32-d Washington .25

jdimmickjdimmick Posts: 9,720 ✭✭✭✭✭
Some one just told me to take a look at this 32-d Washington .25 for sale on E-bay, and give some comment.

There are several reasons why I recommended to stay away from this coin and this seller.

But, does anyone have an idea on how this potential scam will work?

Does this coin look to be a counterfeit, cleaned, or maybe the old switch aroo tactic? Is the obv the same coin as the rev we are seeing?

Any comments, I mentioned to an intrested party that I would post on here for comments from the board

I would not budge on this one. $1800 and no return policy?!?!?! $1800 reserve on a 64/65 which bids for over $3000?!?!?! Not certified?!?!?!?

Does not looked cleaned but I would be wary of the mintmark, looks sketchy from the scan. Possibly a fake.

    Be wary.

I believe that the obv/rev shots are of two different coins designed to make the one you will recieve seem better---BigE

As a buyer this guy has three negs. Now he wants to sell an un-slabbed coin for $1800 and will not take a return?

Best case scenario, the guy decided to take pictures of the same coin with totally different backgrounds, lighting, and settings. Worst case, they are not the same coin at all. I can't tell on the mintmark from those scans, and it does not appear cleaned...dipped maybe, but not cleaned. Seller has a rating of ~30 with 3 negatives...that is the main reason I would stay away right there. And no return policy? I just never understand that one at all. Maybe for a 10 dollar coin, but for a $2K coin? Pure madness.

    Thanks all,

Your opinions were very similar to mine.

The coin looks to be original, not cleaned, the luster seems okay, BUT

the "D" bothers me, and also the rev appears to be of a different coin

Also, this seller is looking to sham with his no return, and I am not a colllector bit

I think BigE has it right - the background is different for the two photos. Now why would someone do that unless he's getting the photos from two different sources or they're of different coins taken separately?

I'm of the thought that the difference in image "look" is more likely due to a change in angles between shots. This is very easy to achieve and I have done it many times when taking photos of coins so that I don't get hot spots on the image. The camera was probably hand-held and not on a tripod so that when the coin was flipped the same angles were not there between the camera, the coin and the light source. As for the coin, from what I can see I think the mintmark looks genuine for a '32-D, they are boxy and ugly looking like this image suggests. That's not to say it isn't altered, I just can't condemn it from that single image. I would bet that the "winning" bidder would receive a super-slider AU58. Either that, or it has been wiped. After all, with no returns and an MS64 coin worth at least $3,000 what could you possibly expect?

Agreed Tom, and unless the image of the reverse is flawed. there is a pretty hefty rim ding front and center on the eagles chest running horizontal that could explain the different camera angle.

I believe that it's two different coins. The reason I say that is that the background is different in the two pictures. I also think this seller has been the subject of several other threads on here and may have been the seller offering the rare 1964 Kennedy half for around 2700 about 8 or 9 months ago.

In case anyone wants or needs another potential negative about this listing - the color on the reverse does not look original to me. I don't remember having seen natural toning that looked quite like that, on mint state Washington Quarters .

I emailed the seller and asked why he used different backgrounds for the two pictures and here is his reply.

well you dont have my funny scanner some times it makes the pictures good
sometimes it dont and I am not a computer expert so I do my best if you have
complains abou the coin dont bid on it

Mark I agree with you the color looks odd. Like a lot of keys, this is one you shouldn't buy raw on Ebay.
