    It's already over bid.
  • I don't know about that, the sample slab market seems to be heating up. I set a new record high price for a sample slab five days ago with this one, PCGS sample slab. Then today I lost out on this one at a new record high level, NGC sample slab. And tomorrow there is another sample slab coming up that I plan on bidding "stupid" money on. (Sorry no link for that one, bidding is still open. image )

    Conder,

I agree with your assessment! Now I wish I hadn't sold my Delaware NGC samples so cheap! I also gave a couple away to board members (JN's), but those went to worthy individualsimage so it doesn't bother me.

Now...if that PA quarter sample went for that much, how much do you think my Sac dollar PCGS sample would be? Or even 1964 JFK PCGS samples? Or even 1st generation PCGS samples?

Only the bottom link to the Sac is readable. I tried to delete the others buy couldn't.

    Cheers,

    Bob

  • Well I've got my bid in (may not be able to be on when it ends.) and it is already over $18. Not bad for a 1960-D dime in an NGC sample slab. NGC 5S3 sample slab Now don't you guys run me up Ok?
  • Conder101:

So my sample slab was the highest ever on ebay huh? Nope. Here is one that I sold for more and is alot scarcer

I thought the normal NGC sample would go cheap, but over $50? No way. What makes this one special?

  • Update:

Conder101's slab he was bidding on sold for $61.00! This buyer is legit and I received a money order from bid-pay from the first slab he bought from me last week.

maybe because it's a YN treasure trivia slab?
  • I know. I have a few other sample slabs that I recently bought which could bring "stupid money". Should I sell, and is everyone else going to do the same on ebay?

    Cameron Kiefer
  • And this free sample holder I got at the last long Beach went for $50.99:

I have this one for sale if anyone wants it

  • I have to admit it surprised me as well. I bid extremely strongly on it because it is about the only NGC sample slab variety I don't have. With a $57 bid I really though I would win it. It does appear the toughest of the three sample slab varieties that are based on the fifth generation NGC slab. I have seen multiple examples of the NGC 5S1 and 5S2 but this was only the second 5S3 I've seen. The differences are in the second line. 5S1 reads Sample FA 00. 5S2 has NGC added as the first word. On 5S3 NGC has been moved to the end of line two.

This Win75 guy looks like he intends to be a serious player in the sample slab market. And he doesn't appear to be the only one either. Anchorsaweigh and jmoore44 both are serious players as well. Jmoore also outbid me on that 5S3.

You have 2 classes of Sample Slab collectors, it's Modern vs Classics.
Myself I can't see why anybody would pay that price for a State Quarter. I collect the CLASSICS by date & mintmark in EACH slab type with CLASSIC coins such as the silver JFK, Rosys, Morgans, War Nickels, Commems and Peace.
By the time I got all the State Quarters from PCGS, NGC, ICG, & SEGS I would need 25 more blue pcgs boxes.
I'll stick with Classics and you guys can do the Modern Clads.

Haha the Classic vs Modern debate in Sample Slabs.

  • So this is a 5s2 type?

    image

    Cameron Kiefer
  • Yes that's an NGC 5S2. If it had a divided insert and beveled edges on the slab it would be a 6S1. The inserts are the same on those two which probably indicates that 5S2 actually came after 5S3. I originally numbered them in the order in which thay came to my attention. I should have renumbered them but I didn't and I'm not going to go back and do it now. There have been too many delays as it is.

So with the big dough the PA quarter PCGS sample slab brought, what does that make my Sac dollar PCGS sample worth? Inquiring minds want to know!!!

Incidently, first generation PCGS sample slabs are still going pretty cheap. But Conder hit the nail right on the head about Win75...this guy is tossing some pretty hefty cash around for samples. I don't even bother bidding against him.

    Cheers,

If Braddick registers a 00 sample slab, does it register as 00?? What a way to go lowimage

  • You can't register a sample slab.

    Cameron Kiefer
  • Actually you can. Dog97 has a sample slab registered in one of his sets.

The reason I went so high on the PCGS PA sample is because it is an unusual sub variety of the type. When the state quarters came out in 1999 PCGS created sample slabs with each date and mintmark in them. As a type they are common because any issue will do for the type. But the PA P mint and the CT D mint slabs are different. All of the others the others are designated as "state name" Sample. The PA P is "Pennsylvania"/ Sample. And the CT-D is Sample Connecticutt. To get an example of those varieties you have to have the specific state and mint issue which makes them tougher to find. Especially since the only one of thise samples that seems to show up regularly are the DE issues. Probably be cause the Mint State DE quarters brought a premium for so long.

I'm really outdated. That slab shows in my reference as a 5S1.
You can't register Samples @ PCGS but NGC let me do it. If you try it won't work but I pulled some strings. Registered Rainbow Sample

  • PCGS 4S2 seems to be bringing about what I normally see them sell for. Maybe a little on the high side.

I don't know who the hell this win75 is, but he certainly is dumping a small fortune on sample slabs...evidence this latest auction:

    Final

I paid less than $20 for mine.

    Cheers,

    Bob
  • I graded over a thousand state quarter samples with PCGS in 1999. I did the whole year set (both P&D). PCGS slabbed a ton of the Delaware P mint (I believe 500+) for give-aways. There are a lot of Pennsylvania also. But the others are mostly limited to 100 of each. I was going to do the entire series, but the demand wasn't there at the time, so I stopped. I had an exclusive on the state quarters at the time. Wondercoin later slabbed some Sacagaweas, but other than those, I don't think PCGS did any for anyone else (except themselves). We considered doing limited editions of other coins, but never followed through with the idea. Maybe the time has come....?
    My website: WWW.telecoin.bizland.com
  • I looked through the sample slabs on ebay last night and all of the 1999 state quarters are available right now in the PCGS slabs including the two odd one I mentioned earlier (PA-P and CT-D and the PA-P is at a lot lowwer level than the $51 I paid for mine. image ) Out of curiousity I took a look at what Win75 has been bidding on lately and he has been all over the map. I can't see any pattern to what he bids on. But he sure likes to bid! He has been a bidder in almost 1200 auctions in the last 28 days. That's as far back as the search went.
