Early copper experts - opinion on half cent please

I would be appreciative of comments on the 1804 half cent on David Lawrence's site:

Half Cents

Perhaps it is the image, but the obverse strike looks a bit weak. Is this typical? Any other thoughs would be appreciated.

You're right, it does look really weakly struck. But I still find it very attractive. I'm no expert, so don't trust my judgement on this.

The 1804 half cent in NGC MS-64, brown appears to be a very nice coin for the grade. Going by the picture it seems to have attractive luster and excellent surfaces. The only downside is that this is the plain 4, stemless variety (C-13), which is the most common half cent variety in the entire series. This coin is only scarce with considerable amounts of red on it. Otherwise it is common in a relative sense, even in this grade. If you are looking for an 1804 dated half cent, this is probably one of the highest graded pieces you will find without breaking the bank.

BTW the hair detail on these coins is delicate and subtle, and it’s hard to catch it at the right angle to pick it up in a photograph. I suspect, but don’t know for sure that this coin has all the detail.

If you are looking for a type coin with red, you might consider holding out for an 1806, large 6, stems (C-4). That coin is a hoard piece, and there are several hundred of them known in Mint State with varying amounts of red on them. A few years ago quite a few certified examples were around, but I have not seen that many of them lately.

In recent years I have been working on a set of British coins - at least one coin from each king or queen who issued pieces that are collectible. I am also collecting at least one coin for each Roman emperor from Julius Caesar to ... ?

i would have graded ms-63, but does appear to have nice luster. centering is ok, weak dentils. color is just ok. very common variety, perfect for type. price seems strong to me, i would guess closer to 2400. at 3000, you can certainly find a better type coin.

if you want an 1804 w/ detail, spiked-chins can be found well-struck.

  • HERE is the same variety (in AU) with good hair detail. David Lawrence's price sounds about right to me, but it is difficult to evaluate from a computer image.
