THE solution - don't buy toned OR untoned coins!

coinguy1coinguy1 Posts: 13,484 ✭✭✭
A number of excellent reasons have been given for avoiding toned coins - many are ugly, QT, AT, too dark, too original, uneven, too pretty and/or simply unacceptable, for reasons galore. image

But wait - there is equally good justification to avoid untoned coins, too. Many have been dipped (and we can't even tell which ones) and might retone. They might be missing metal as a result of the dipping - never mind that we would probably need a microscope to tell. Some consider any dipping to be as bad as a harsh/harmful cleaning or doctoring. image

So, to play it safe, we can just avoid the toned coins, and the untoned ones, as well. Who's with me on this one? image Come on, let's start a REAL rebellion! imageimage

Or, in the alternative, we can use common sense, buy what we like, not worry about whether others have the same preferences that we do, learn what we can, and enjoy our hobby. Hmmm...THAT would be different.

In case anyone is unclear about the tone (pun intended) of this post, here are three hints:

  • I agree with you to much "this is AT, that has been dipped", if you dont like it dont buy it. If u do like it then buy it! As simple as that.

I'm completely with you there, Mark...I have my personal preferences and others have theirs. Some of the coins they buy I think are ugly, but they aren't going into my collection, so I don't care. A really good point to quit being so severely anal about the "whys" and buy what looks good and isn't damaged.

That would be soo much easier to do. But I think the main thing thats holding people back is that grading services do grade higher if the toning is good, am I wrong?

Well, you can always buy only from the mint, never from any other source. That way you have a reasonable assurance that whatever happens you caused it...
  • My word! I actually received a coin in the mail today, took the slab, gave it a mighty squeeze with the trusty pliers and put it in a holder of my own choosing.
I am officially now a fanatic... a freak. I have decided to appreciate this coin on a rarity/preservation/beauty scale of my own devising.
    It should be illegal.

Mark--you're a trouble maker and I am officially starting a petition to have you not only banned from this board, but all of numismatics.

How bout we use the knowledge from this board to learn about this kind of stuff so we actually know what we are buying so that we don't spend our hard earned $$ on outragous prices for numismatic JUNK? If you want junk there's plenty of it CHEAP on eBay. edited to add on TeleTrade too.

danged right! mark, you are making far too much sense. what you are asking would require "collectors" to learn how to think for themselves. why should they, if pcgs & ngc are around to do the thinking for them? seems like $350 MILLION is cheap for the privilege of having someone else think for you.

i guess i'm jumping ship. i say, enjoy only what pcgs permits you to enjoy.

I agree that $350M is a bit much to be sucked out of the industry. But it's going to a noble cause! image

I'm trending more and more toward viewing the slab as an insurance policy only. I grade the coin and if I like the price, I buy it - knowing that the slab is a bit of insurance if the coin later turns vibrant purple or horridly black.

Other than that, I don't think much of grade guarantees and I don't think much of ever changing professional opinions. Do as Q. David Bowers says - use the grade on the slab as a starting point and decide if YOU like the coin. Then, if the price is right, buy it.

Ahhh, there is a certain charm and beauty to collecting PO01 coins. Neither the Toned or Untoned issues play a role.

  • Lucy - you can have my share of the Frankies (I don't have any in my collection so don't ask!). imageimage

I agree with Mark - just collect the coins that you like and don't try to force your opinion about what people should collect and what is right and wrong on the rest of the community! If you see a coin that YOU like, what does it matter if someone else doesn't like it? It's not going into that other person's collection - it's going into YOUR collection!

Look at the slabs as someone else's opinion of the coin, then ignore that opinion and form your own! If you don't know how to grade the coin (if that's what it takes to form your opinion) - LEARN!! There are enough books available to learn how to do basic grading on any coin ever made!

And after you have formed your opinion on the grade of the coin, throw it out! Look at the coin - do you like the way it looks?? Then buy the coin!

  • PCGS did not grade one of my coins because of PVC. If I dip it there's a chance I can send it back and get it slabbed. What do I have to lose by dipping it? I think it's a high grade coin and the only way to realize it's value I believe is to dip it and resubmit it in the hope of getting it slabbed. Anyone disagree?
    I would welcome any comments.
