great thread! I like it because we try to decide where to draw a line on an issue which is really a complex continuum predicated mainly by these issues: (not in any particular order of importance)

Appearance (does the color look "natural" to an experienced eye?)
Time (how long did it take for the color to develop on the coin?)
Intent (how hard did someone try to make it happen vs. was it accidental "tarnish")
History (how much do the buyer/seller know about the above)
Disclosure (if there is any info the seller has, does he tell the buyer?)

this is an important topic because of the supply and demand function, as another poster emphasized.

anyway, this morning I took these pics, the first dollar was in my whitman album for about 20 years (started white) the second has been in there for a couple of years, I took the first out because I wanted the toning to stop, I think it looks great right there. the peace dollar has mellowed just a bit but mostly looks just like it did when poked in the hole, same time as the morgan.

Don't plan on selling either of these coins, so someday my heirs will dispose of the pieces, and tell the buyers that they are album toned. I'd say this situation lands about in the middle of the continuum of the intent/duration/results/disclosure spectrum,

where beautiful bag toned morgans are the ultimate result of accidental/took decades/beautiful/desireable

    and on the other hand,

coins baked just this morning in Jethro's custom made sulfer oven in his basement are on the other end, with the ugly ones being the worst.

both cases and everything in between, it's between the buyer and the seller, and caveat emptor

baley has provided a most invaluable post. the 3d pic is similar to what i've experienced. last time i checked, i had a few morgans that are near qualifying as "monster" toned in my w-r album.
