Braddick has bought a couple and seems to think they are worth the premium. He has said the thinks there will be collectors wanting only the star(*) coins. I'm not so sure.
I have one, its a nice coin and I didn't pay a premium for the *. I would have to see the coin in person to judge whether or not I would pay a premium for the *. Neat idea tho, that seems to be catching hold.
The two (*) coins I have are superior when it comes to eye appeal. I'm not sure if there is a premium for (*)'s as the ones I have I submitted raw.

We are finite beings, limited in all our powers, and, hence, our conclusions are not only relative, but they should ever be held subject to correction. Positive assurance is unattainable. The dogmatist is the only one who claims to possess absolute certainty.
I have seen a few star coins and all those coins have great eye appeal. I like the star designation and would pay more for those type of coins in an NGC slab.
a great idea! as most of the time most all star coins are exceptional eye appealling coins!!!! now i am sure that there are many non star coins that are as good or better and just have not been snet back as of today for the star designation and i am also sure there are many coins that get submitted for the star designation that do not get it but are still star coins! such is the human subjective art of the coin game
I happen to like the idea of the NGC star....... here is why, I would rather see them give a star to a coin that sets itself apart from others in eye-appeal, rather than give a bump up in grade.
I have a couple of these coins with the * and they are lookers. I don't feel they are too loose with the * either. With the exception of some of the Binion Hoard which I have seen some that don't look too special. But that was a big money deal, I wonder if that had anything to do with it.

Most * coins have strong eye appeal. The NGC Registry gives a 25% increase in points for a * graded coin. I think in Coin World, I read you can resubmit for a * designation for $10.
The coins have to be MS63 or PR63 or better to be considered. Coins that are MS70 or PR70 can't get a *, or coins dated after 1979, that are MS69 or PR69.
I just picked up a 1976 Silver Proof Set with all 3 coins being PF69 * UCams. I was impressed with the set. I thought it had nice eye appeal, but not tremendous. The Eisenhower was an exact match of my PCGS's graded one. If you're playing the registry game, you'll need them, otherwise I would pass if the premium was too high.
Michael, I've noticed Teletrade has had a few sets of those 1976 NGC MS69* coins in their auctions. They appear to be superior for the grade and real jewels! I missed bidding on a set myself and now I see there hasn't been others offered in the upcoming sales.
Pat, That's exactly where I picked mine up. I really only wanted the Ike, but the last one Ike went for $110 alone for a 76 silver. The entire set went for $150 so I guess I got a good deal. I used all 3 coins for my Proof Type Set and the Ike pushed me up to 3 on the Registry Set. I won't be there for long since there's someone else with 2 * Ikes that hasn't completed his set yet. And there are only 2 * 78 Ikes so I doubt I'll find the other one.
Overall, they are nice coins and will continue to buy them as long as the premium is low.

The STAR coins I own are PQ Eye Appeal. No slight issues that detract. I like them and continue to hunt for NGC coins with the STAR on the label.
