Check this coin being sold on ebay now. This seller bought few of these counterfeit trade dollars from two different china sellers. I didn't find where he bought the 1972 S.

    Considering the Seller has recently been a heavy buyer of many counterfeit Trade dollars, as you mentioned, and the coin just doesn't look right- I'd steer clear.

    i would say in my opinion it is genuine but s mints are more common

    for me he also greatly undergrades this coin

    also may be a very rare unique coin as from my research they started trades in 1873?

    might be a discovery coin?? unique??

    This piece is definitely a counterfeit. From the picture it looks like a cast copy. The “2” has been altered because it is not the same style as the other numbers in the date. During this period the dates were sunk into the dies as four digit numbers, and the numbers were all the same size. The style of the numbers varied from year to year (Just compare the Indian cents.), but the style of each number was the same.

    This item is a fabrication. Although pattern Trade Dollars were made in 1872, none of them had the regular issue design.
    Retired dealer and avid collector of U.S. type coins, 19th century presidential campaign medalets and selected medals. In recent years I have been working on a set of British coins - at least one coin from each king or queen who issued pieces that are collectible. I am also collecting at least one coin for each Roman emperor from Julius Caesar to ... ?

    The U.S. Government made trade dollars from 1873 through 1885.

    Are TD counterfeits collectable or are the bidders just idiots?

    The details are mushy and faded.....a definite counterfiet. Probably not even silver. Nice date, too. Someone should ask the seller if you can order an 1871-D to go along with this coin.

    19th century counterfeits are collectable, but the legality to own factors can be rocky. Technically counterfeit coins are subject to seizure by the government. As a practical matter the feds don’t seem to bother anybody so long as they are sold as antique counterfeits and not real coins.

    Still it’s like the sex laws in some states. If you get caught doing it in an illegal way, you can get run in if the cops feel like hassling you.

    Okay guys and gals, this a fake coin. Period. To make things worse, it is a really, really bad fake.

    The question prior is a good one, I wonder how many people have or getting burned on these?

    Sometimes that approach works, and these slimeballs shut down. Might be too late in this case, though, since the auction closes tonight.

    Horse crap! He's been knowingly selling fakes that he's been buying. Here's his closed auctions on ebay:
