I'm so happy when i find a new barber that is high end for the grade, i wish i could post pictures

Barbers in mint state haven't done any thing in almost 13 years [except go down] so i don't know why i'm haing such a hard time finding nice pieces. I'd like to thank the few private collectors and some fine dealers that are helping me slowly find the few that meet my expectations. Special thanks to one of the most considerat dealers i've done buisness with, Mike prinze of Larry Whittlow coins, he's a very good man and a pleasure to talk coins with. Les [barberlover]

for me the ms barbers are like you say the sleepers and most underapprecdaited coins of the market the last ten years~ and for good looking coins that are really uncommon rare why sell in this market? they are rare and in strong hands no wonder why they are sooooooooooooo hard to find!!

why sell something for lower than it is worth and then you cant replace it!!

prices will have to rise before the good stuff starts coimng out with more feequencey

i mean my friend showed a monsta rare superb gem original white!!!!!barber half pcgs to a leading wholesaler 5 months ago and the offer was insulting!...............lol the wholesaler sais well thsat is the market and they have actually gone down the last three yuears................lol

    sooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooo there was no sale..............lol

Michal, just because a collector baught a beautiful barber quarter or half in 89 at 80 percent more
than it's worth now is no excuse for being selfish and not selling the nice ones to me a current market prices!!!!

Barber don't you mean 4-5 times more back in 1989? than current values.

PCGS can hold your scans/drawings/stolen pictures if 40 kB or less, upload them here. I am guessing you must have a computer to be reading this board. If you do not have a good camera or scanner and purchased coin locally, then that is more difficult.

Don't forget the approx 1 pt. grade inflation since 1990. Today's MS 64-66 barbers are worth closer to 40-50% of the 1989 levels. If you consider superb pieces in the 67-68, some of those have been reaching levels very close to those established in 1989, esp. on better dates.

Agree with roadrunner. Many of the record high prices for superb coins were set at the Elias. and Price sales...within the last 5 or so years. If these coins returned to market new records could be set. The current top registry set is superb and would bring superb prices. K

Just keep buying the nice ones when they show up because those coins just don't show up... period.

I spent a lot of time looking for nice MS 65 Barber coinage for my type set. I wound up getting proof coins because there just wasn't anything around in MS that I found which IMO was attractive and reasonably priced.

You said it. Compare the pop reports and prices to the wildly popular walking Liberty series and you will get an Eye opener. Haven't seen current numbers but the 04-S is probably the scarcest mint state coin of the 20th century. The 96-O has just a few more and you still have a dozen dates with mint state pop numbers around 50 (per complete guide to certified barber coinage) the 01-S is never available. Try to find common dates like the 09-S or the 11-S. It is mind boggling really!

    Cointagious -

You don't know how good a coin looks unless you see it in person. I can tell you horror stories
re what you can't see in an image.

The Capped Bust Qtr I bought in 4 last month is an example. There are typically a few small
contact marks in the field to limit the grade of this coin & I didn't see any of them. The seller told me that there was a light pin scratch in the rt obverse field of the coin which was its grade limiting factor which a viewer could not see in the image.

I saw a brilliant Seated Half in 6 had numerous carbon flecks / dip residue on its obverse that a viewer could not see from the image. Ditto re carbon flecks to a Large Cent that was slabbed
    as 4 RD.

Images are useless with proof coins, as you can't see the hairlines.

So, just because the image looks good does not necessarily mean that the particular coin "has your name on it."

One reason I don't even look at E-Bay is if I or someone I trust can't actually see the coin & / or I can't buy a coin on approval, I pass.

Elcontador is correct. Nice looking MS65 and better Barber material is difficult. Proof material, even with their tiny mintages, is generally available (at a reasonable price). I know someone putting together a Barber half dollar set in PF64 (PCGS/NGC/ANACS), and he has yet to have much difficulty (he's maybe 2/3 thirds done).

I'm not a huge fan of proof material myself. I prefer the look of a business strike.

Always looking for original, better date VF20-VF35 Barber quarters and halves, and a quality beer.
  • The 08-O half is scuffy and I once dealt with the same seller on a high end piece. I drove to pick up the coin and i could tell he was nervous over the phone. When i got there i understood why. The coin had carbon all over, the image did not show. His loss. I would never buy a coin from him or his affiliates.

The 1915-S is OK as a 64 but it does have alot of chatter on the cheek.

Survey 1/21/03: Out of 848 Barber Halves up for auction: 5 PCGS slabs [only 1 MS65] and 11 NGCs [2 MS65s - one ugly one with a hit on the mouth]. Less than half of 1% MS65 or better!! And less than 2% in decent slabs! These coins are cheap compared to the ridiculous prices walkers are fetching.
