Yeah or Nay! Morgans by PCGS or NGC.

Agree or disagree:

From what I have seen, grade for grade, mint-state Morgans look better in PCGS than the same in NGC. Gem PCGS Morgans give you crisp, clean fields and cheeks, with the lightest bit of chatter. Luster breaks are OK but marks are not. NGC 66 Morgans look worse than some PCGS 65s. I do not mean to say that NGC overgrades, but it seems many times their coins are "just made it". I am not knocking either company, I purchase coins in both holders. It is obvious the disparity in the quality of grading between these companies is sometimes pretty wide.

Any remarks?

My first remark is that I seen a PCGS/NGC battle coming soon...

Personally, from what I have seen, they can look equally good in either holder... it depends on the coin- PCGS and NGC will both have some dogs, but their grading is pretty good. If you are working on a PCGS reg. set, then you may not see enough NGC coins to make a fair statement.

I own both in Grades of MS 65 and 66 and i think they are about even. I own a PCGS Morgan Graded MS 66 by PCGS and it should never have been graded any higher then MS64. ALL the top grading companies have problems with the art.

Thanks for the good laugh, all I can say is ask guys like Greg Bingham what he thinks. No other collector on this board has put together a finer set than his with the possible exception of one person and he doesn't participate. You need to look at more Morgans as airplanenut suggested.

The bigwigs at PCGS have said on the boards that it is their goal to get all the good coins out of NGC holders and into PCGS holders while leaving the lesser coins and the crossover rates seem to prove that.
The overall quality of both services seem to be a little looser than they were years ago but then again the overall quality of good coins is declining because the goods ones are stashed away in collections and we are just seeing the substandard coins that are kept in dealer's inventory and on eBay.
I have seen a lot of Morgans in NGC holders that I didn't agree with the grade but these were toned ones. White coins seem about the same from either service to me.
Change that we can believe in is that change which is 90% silver.

The one's i've looked at seem to be about equal in grade so i wouldn't worry about who it was slabbed by i would buy both NGC and PCGS
  • I only buy PCGS coins and I might buy some ANACS coins.

Morgan Dollars are viewed by all services as among the easiest to grade. In white, PCGS, NGC, ANACS, and IGC seem to be about the same. In toned/monster stuff, PCGS may be a little tougher.

from my experience with dmpl morgans pcgs is the leader also with ms morgans

but i must say there are monster super great excpetional morgans at pcgs and ngc

i guess to really have to give you a 100% correct answer i would nedd to see the coin first sight seen then give you an answer on a coin by coin basis

but again if i were a betting man i had to take a chance and all i had to go on is a holder pcgs or ngc sight unseen then i would place my bet on pcgs

There is no way to generalize this argument about Morgans in PCGS and NGC holders. I've seen undergraded, overgraded and "dead on" coins in both brands of holders, and trying to give a general sight-unseen ruling is misleading and uselss. You have to look at the coins and judge them one at a time.

In fact I do buy both and grade each according to my own standards. I know that these two grading services have their weaknesses. In my opinion, most of the coins I have seen lately, and mind you the supply was limited, have been at two local coin shops and a few dealers on the internet. I am not trying to generalize all the coins by a few, but even still, it seems that NGC grades just a little looser- allows a little more contact or luster breaks for the same grade. There are finds from both companies that go both ways, and as the truth, you have to just keep searching while using a little pickin'. In fact, one dealer I spoke to agreed with me on this topic but said from his own experience, PCGS overgrades Walkers.

Mind you, I realize that I have only encountered a very small percentage in my few years as a collector, but personally, I don't like most that are graded "gem" by either service. Today's grades are so locked into "how much the coin will bring" that I only use the "assigned" grade to narrow down what I want to consider. As a buyer, it doesn't matter as much whose slab it's in. I must admit, eventually I put them in PCGS slabs, simply because I prefer preserve them in PCGS slabs.
