390 Miles round trip to look at coins. Phooey !!

Well I made the trip to Kent, Washington today. Pulled in a few minutes early and had to stand in line for about 10 minutes. Got in side and found none of the dealers I usually BS with at all.

Off to Hunting for coins. Walked up to the first table a low and behold the guy had Merc's. Six or seven early dates in 63FB or higher. Looked at them but they were all White so the interest was not really there. Took his name and the dates anyway in case the mind is changed. This same guy had a slug of PCGS slabbed Buffalo's also. Did not really look at the dates but there was atleast 20 of them.

Off to another Table. This guy had a NGC 63FB or 64FB 1916D Merc Dime. Asked him a simple question and I guess he was not concerned and gave a disgruntled reply. To heck with him, I left.

Walked around and finally saw some more Merc's. Now these were cool and some dates you really do not see every day or at a smaller show like this. The Dealer was busy and finally he finished and asked what was needed. I asked to see his 19S, 24D, 27S and 28D Mercs. His reply was, You know these are High Grades. My reply, Yes thats why I want to see them. All Raw coins so I graded them then went to the sheet to see how his price and the sheet price compared. The Dealer and I were right on the money with our opinions of the coins. Only problem with these is they were Raw Coins. The 4 IMO were all MS64 or higher coins. The 27S was a 65 coin I believe. I will see him at the PNNA in the spring and maybe some dealing will happen. This dealer also had a good selection of pre 1900 coinage, both slabbed and raw. Really, he had some nice stuff.

Walked some more but found no more Mercs. Did see more Buffalo's though. Man they were everywhere. The Seattle area must be Buffalo Heaven.

Strolled back to the displays and one really caught my eye. A guy had brought his Canadian Cent and Nickle Collection from 1922 to the present. All of the coins were there and I believe in real decent grades. Really cool I thought and I told him so as he was watching me admire the collection.

Well that was about it. Seems like the place was busy but just fewer dealers there than two years ago. All in all not a bad way to spend a day. Well almost a good way to spend a day. As usual I could really do without the Seattle area traffic that now stretches almost all the way south to Chehalis. Man it Sucks.

Oh Yea the Phooey was because I did not spend a cent at the show. A first for me I think.

    Ken,

I was probably waiting in line with you. Sorry we didn't get a chance to meet.

I was so desperate I bought a couple Morgans!

Ken, my wife and I noticed that display too and thought it was very nice. We both gave it our votes for best at the show.

I am very glad I didn't have to put in the mileage you did to go to this show. To be honest I am usually surprised if I come away from a show in the NW with having purchased anything. And I certainly don't consider myself a coin snob. I bought one $30 Booker T today and was actually very happy about it. I always feel the initial excitment of stepping onto the bourse floor, but it usually wears off fairly quickly around here. You see a lot of the same inventory month after month, show after show. But, I guess I've heard that complaint about other regions.

Bottom line, I still like going. Wish I'd known who you were. I'm sure we were there at the same time.

He got My vote also. IMO its Really Neat to see a full collection like that. I do not think I mentioned the Guy was watching me the whole time I was looking over his collection. After a few minutes I looked up and said it was really nice then he said it was his personal collection.

  • Ken--
That's very cool. I would have like to have told him myself. Didn't see anyone over there when I was looking at it though. Very impressive the way it was all laid out.

    Ken –

I agree with your assessment of the show. I was there from about 10:15 to 1:30. It was indeed Buffalo heaven, although most of the dates I came across were common. Overall I thought the show was pretty busy. Lots of old retired Boeing fellas swapping bags of Wheatties. I noticed that the two guys selling Krugerrands near the back were doing a pretty brisk business. I think they were trading for $372, if I recall right. I saw one guy buy 10 at one time. Gold seemed active. Must be that Iraq thing.

I didn’t really see much toned material (except for some nice overpriced Commems), so I left empty handed as well. But overall it way a nice way to spend Saturday morning. We'll do better next time.
