What's the first thing you think of when you see a new coin?

If someone unexpectedly were to show you an unc chain cent or Spanish pillar dollar you'd never seen before, what would be the first thing you'd think of?

When I see coins like that I wonder where they've been and how they got to the present day unscathed.

When I show coins to some others, these are the responses I expect.

Non-collectors: "How much is it worth?"

Metal detectors: "Where did you find it?"

Slabiphiles: "Why isn't it slabbed?" or "The tick on the cheek will probably keep it from going above 63." or "Is that corrosion at 6 o'clock on the reverse, or is it a planchet defect?"

Coin dealer: "What did you pay for it?"

I only really have interest if the coin is either a mega rare coin worth 6 or 7 figures that i'll never be able to afford or if it's in a series i collect and it has great eye appeal, is it for sale. If it doesn't fall into one of those 2 catagories i won't say i'm not interested but it sure dampens my enthusiasm. [Like when i find a beautifully toned full luster seated half and the owner posts a picture that makes me druel and then is so cruel as not to sell it to me!!!] right gemeni [lol]
The President claims he didn't lie about taxes for those earning less then $250,000 a year with public mandated health insurance yet his own justice department has said they will use the right of the government to tax when the states appeals go to court.

"man would my girlfriend be pissed at me if I brought that one home!"
  • The first Thing I would do would be to point and say "Look its Eliasberg" and then I would run out the door with the coin.... but thats just me.

  • What is the slab #? Just kidding. I want to know where it has been to stay such in great condition.

First thing I always look for is an antique original look whether it is copper, silver or gold. Eye appeal is important to how a coin makes an impression. No matter the design if it is all scratchy and dull pasty white or unnatural red (in the case of copper) then the coin has no interest to me whatsoever. Original coins of any denomination are a wonder to behold.

I,d say `what museum did you rob?`What person of affluence did you steal it from?
I guess it depends on who is showing it.If just anyone/ or a no-one,I,d think it was counterfiet.

I wonder too if we don`t have the means to produce any coin from any era with such detail it couldnt be distinguished between real or fake.I,m a total skeptic too though.

After all, some of the best counterfieted works of art are so good they are sometimes `better` than the original.
  • Design first, then country of origin, denomination, and metallic content. And maybe KM #.
