Why don't more national shows come to the midwestern states "like Minnesota"

Especially interested in dealer opionions.
The President claims he didn't lie about taxes for those earning less then $250,000 a year with public mandated health insurance yet his own justice department has said they will use the right of the government to tax when the states appeals go to court.

I don’t know about Minnesota specifically, but some states are really dealer hostile. Some go nuts with their sales tax laws. A couple of years ago California almost ended coin shows in the state by insisting that dealers were subject to nexus laws as soon as they stepped into the state. California said that they had the right to collect income taxes on ALL of a dealer’s business, not just the business they had in California. That caused many dealers to say “good bye” to California shows until they got off their high horse.

Rhode Island has purchase reporting and time delay laws that make it prohibitive to hold a show in the state. Other states with really aggressive local laws make it impossible to hold coin shows.

You also need either a strong show promoter or a strong local or regional club to host a convention. Coin shows are a lot of work, and you need lots of hard working volunteers and a very savvy promoter who knows how to advertise and promote a show.
Retired dealer and avid collector of U.S. type coins, 19th century presidential campaign medalets and selected medals. In recent years I have been working on a set of British coins - at least one coin from each king or queen who issued pieces that are collectible. I am also collecting at least one coin for each Roman emperor from Julius Caesar to ... ?

I'm sure the thought of a dealer having to go to Minnesota is slightly less appealing to them than going for a rectal exam.
  • Maybe they're afraid more moose will show up than actual collectors.

Successful convention towns usually fulfill most of the following:
In or near major population centers
Easy/relatively cheap air transportation in and out
    Decent weather
    Good and variety alternative activities/entertainment
Sufficient accomodations and restaurants for anticipated crowd

Can't answer on the dealer part. But the low temp last night in Embarrass, MN (just north of Duluth where I live) was -25F! image That's right, minus 25F!!! That is actual air temp, and not the wind chill.

If you stock the coin close to your nose for examination, it would probably freeze right to it.

    Supercoin, aren't you from Rochester?

Oh hell no! Coins will get cold *wink*

If you build it, they will come.... -but not when its that cold-
