Original Double Mint Set Question????

How often do you find original double mint sets that are NOT toned?

Could it be that gem coins have been replaced??

  • I think a brilliant white mint set from 1946 would always leave me wondering. But, I can't say with certainty that an original mint set would have to be toned. It sure seems likely to me that it would be though.
With the price that original mint sets are bringing now, and that a lot of the coins are cherry-picked for grading, the odds of getting mint sets these days with coins that are "new to the party" in them are increasing.
Even the original packaging isn't a guarantee of anything.

And as far as "how often" I've seen original mint sets without toning. I can't think of many times, if any.

    Only on ebay!!!
I've never seen too many at a show. Usually at bottom feeders tables. Some people used to cover in cellophane, but I really don't know the results. I also feel that some scoundrals wrap in cellophane to add credibilty to put together sets. I guess I'd look for roll rub, and circulation
    type marks.

Also, toning is a process of storage to a degree. If the mint set was stored in very fortunate circumstances, it could avoid toning to some extent. I saw a 1949 mint set early this month that was outstanding. Most were toned, though a few were not. About half of my 1955 set is toned, but half is not.

No way a set stays untoned for 54 years in cardboard holders.

    Sorry not an original set.

The strong prices are for original only.

They are strong multiples of roll bid, to the point you could take MS64 coins and still make money.

Original does NOT mean it has to be toned. While most will be toned, some can show only light toning. Some can show practically no toning at all.

I am very suspicious of a untoned mint set in the cardboard holders. Sulfur is in the cardboard and is high reactive and will and does cause a reaction with the coins surface which we call toning. I am not saying untoned original coins can't be found in the cardboard holders, I am saying it would be rare and unlikely. At Long Beach, I saw some original sets with all the coins toned and then came across a dealer who had some untoned ones, upon inspection the halves had rub that I felt was a result of being in a roll.

Untoned coins in the old cardboard holder are suspicious, but these certainly look original.
