1955 mint set

I have a very nicely toned 55 mint set. Whats your opinions of a FMV price?
I'm also considering busting it up for Slabbing (keeping everything of course)
I've heard that 55D washingtons in 66 are trading very strong prices.

Fair retail price for exceptional toned original set would be between 180-200. Greysheet ask is $150.

if i were you i wouldn't break up any sets for slabbing. old original sets on ebay fetch more than the sum of the pieces now.

If you have the original packaging, be sure to keep it. Even if you do slab the coins.

Hey, I have about 10 original packaging for double mint sets, lots of minor coins too.
My dad stuck coins in albums, and got into franklins about 20 yrs ago. He busted up a bunch
of sets. I could try to put them back together, but in my mind that wouldnt really be ORIGINAL.

I wonder how much I could get for just the packaging?image

  • How much you could get just for the packaging? Probably more than you think. I have sold pieces of original packaging before. There is probably more demand than you think. Try it. Put up an original outer envelope or the cardboard cards with the paper covering on eBay. I think you might be surprised.

I'd be careful about listing empty holders.

I saw a seller get a neg for selling some, even though the ad cleared stated NO COINS, the buyer Neg'd him saying "There are no coins. What do I want these for?"

  • I sold an original outer envelope to a mint set. Made sure in the description everyone knew that was what I was selling. Had a lot of response to the auction. It surprised me. They are historical numismatic items, and have every right to be auctioned. But, yes use caution in your wording.

Interesting footnote. The winner of the auction was a board member here and invited me to come on over and take a look. I didn't even know this forum existed. I won't give you his name, for I'm sure he would be flooded with vicious PM's. image

  • I'd be bidding if you have the packaging for a 1957 mint set. I only have the coins in the cards and would like to make it whole again.

  • About two weeks ago I auctioned a real nice 57 original mint set. It did not have the outer envelope and was missing one of the pink paper covers for a card. The coins were great, original and nicely toned. I got one bid for $150.00. That guy was a happy camper when he saw the set.
This week I have an auction going for a 57 set with all the original packaging. Nice coins. On par with the coins in the other set. I already have 18 bids and it was at about $146 with five days to go last I looked.
    The complete packaging matters.
