Slab Trivia. What makes this NGC 1964 PR65 Unusual?

This fun trivia will have you thinking outside the box! What is it about this 1964 PR65 NGC Kennedy that is unusual? (Conder101 can't play!)
I apologize for the large pictures- I'm still learning how to shrink them down. . .

  • There is no NGC logo or barcode behind the grade on the label on the front.

  • Also, no divider ridge in the slab between the label and the coin.

I get the feeling this is a trick question, though. image

  • Doesn't designate what type of coin it is in the slab? In writing as in "Kennedy Half" Geez, I don't know...

I know the answer, but won't give it away.

Too bad the coin has haze.
  • Give it away Gereg. He is asking everyone except Conder101.

You guys are good, in fact- I hadn't even considered ClarkofKent's answer before, but that isn't quite right!
    Now think-
One clue: Think of NGC's history. . . image

  • Is it the "of America?"

  • It doesn't say that it's the "ANA Official Grading Service"??????????????

  • The insert is backwards.

Besides that looks like older NGC slab.

It doesn't have the ANA logo since ANACS was then the grading company of the ANA?

  • ANACS was the ANA offical grading until 1991 when it was sold and moved to Ohio. This slab should be from before that.

Clark- No way, but I'm thinking it's more fun if someone comes up with the answer! Now, this isn't one of those lame questions where there really is no right answer. It DOES have a specific answer!
A decent hint: This coin was NOT in the NGC pop reports for the first three years of NGC's existence. That's a clue. Also, it was graded during the ninth day of NGC's establishing themselves and right BEFORE NGC had their first meeting of setting Standards... (hint #2!)

  • NGC wouldn't slab modern coins for the first few years and they must have decided that at their first meeting.???? After this coin was slabbed....

  • White insert and not black like the ones for the first 6 months.

Cameron- You got it. NGC set a Standard of not grading ANY "Modern" coin (to them that was clad coins, and included the silver 1964 Kennedy) dated after 1963. This, I believe, included MintState coins but especially PROOF coinage! NGC even took out full page ads in the trades condemning the practice of grading Modern Proofs. Their logic was that they were too common and the average collector would be dupped into buying slabbed Moderns at highly inflated prices!
It was kind of a slap in the face to PCGS, but NGC changed their position a couple years into it all but continued by stating they would NOT list any Modern Proof in their Pop reports for at least one year!

Now, jump ahead 12+ years and you see many, many Moderns in NGC holders with many of them now sporting the PR70UCAM grades!
I always wonder what would have happened had NGC stuck to their guns and not graded any Moderns, even to this day.

It was slabbed when they weren't yet officially accepting moderns (1964) for grading.

PCGS would be a distant #2. Had PCGS not won the "modern wars" think how many MORE coins would be in NGC slabs.

Greg- I absolutely 100% agree with you.
NGC would have given up some profits, but long term they would have been a powerhouse that PCGS would have difficulty contending with!

Pat, how long have you had this one and how did you find it? If this was one of the first ones slabbed, is the number 121496- meaningful? The reason I ask is that I have a "few" '64 Kennedys that have earlier slabs numbers but are in current looking slabs. Just wondering.
