Singular coins (such as the Amon Carter 1794) were not considered - only the entire date/mintmark as a whole. But you make a good point on the King of Siam set - I wonder why that didn't make the top 100 list like the Amazonian set did?

    Which is J-1776?

I haven't thought too much about this, but this is what I think I'd want (in no specific order):

    1. 1870-S Seated Dollar
    2. 1873-CC N/A Seated Quarter
    3. 1804 T1 Bust Dollar
    4. 1894-S Barber Dime
    5. 1792 silver Disme
    6. 1794 regular issue FH Dollar
    7. 1794 pattern issue FH Dollar
    8. 1913 Liberty 5c
    9. 1870-S $3
    10. 1798 $5 Small Eagle reverse

This is fun, so I'll post my significant runners-up:

    11. 1885 Trade Dollar
    12. 1796 Bust Dollar, BB-64, the John Whitney Walter specimen
    13. 1849 $20
    14. 1907 $20 Ultra High Relief (either edge type is fine w/ me)
    15. 1893 Isabella Commem 25c, proof
    16. 1817/4 Capped Bust 50c
    17. 1873-CC N/A Seated Dime
    18. 1802 Bust Half Dime
    19. 1856 FE 1c, Snow-3
    20. 1793 Chain 1c

    Or for pure publicity the 1916-D 10c, 1955 DDO 1c, 1942/1 10c, and the 1918/7 5c?

How can anyone leave out the copper 1943 P/D/S cent? Didn't that lost coin cause a nationwide hunt two years ago?

Maybe a couple more to consider:

    1787 BRASHER "DOUBLOON"
    1933 Double Eagle
I'll half to get the date on this but there is a half (1850's O mint? I think) that there are only three of. See Eliasburg.

I agree with all of the above.....you gotta say that the Amazonian set is one of THE most beautiful designs ever.

I have received an email from the author stating that the book will be heavily promoted shortly but may not be available for sale for a few weeks. Keep your eye out for it!

    Their top 10:

    1804 $1
    1913 Liberty head nickel
    1933 $20
    1849 $20
    1907 ultra high relief $20
    1894-S dime
Judd 1776 (Indian head $20 pattern)
    1943 copper cent
    1822 half eagle ($5)
    1885 trade dollar
  • dragondragon Posts: 4,548 ✭✭
    TDN,

Oh that's right, the famous 1849 $20.00 gold, only 1 known in the Smithsonian huh (and its cleaned)? That coin should definately be on the list. Not sure I agree with the 1943 copper cent though, although very rare, its just an off metal error and not in the same class as an 1822 $5.00 or an 1804 dollar IMO.

My top 10 in chronological order :

    1793 Chain Cent
    1794 $1
King of Siam 1834 Proof set*
    1885 Trade Dollar
    1894-S Barber Dime
    Judd 1776 1907 $20
    1907 Ultra High Relief $20
    1913 Liberty Nickel
    1933 $20
    1943 Lincoln Cent

    * If I am not allowed to include a set, I'll take the 1804 Dollar from the King of Siam set. Even though it is not the finest known, it is the most historically significant.

Here is a obvious reply from yours truely.

    1. The Joshua II Example of the 1920S Merc Dime which is a Ex Kritzman Coin. Can be seen in his Registry Set I believe.

You know the rest, any Great looking Merc. I know other Coins are Outstanding but the Appeal for me is not there.

I would have thought the 1854-s half eagle deserved mention, more so than unique patterns.

Todd: with all due respect, I don't come into your conversations on this board with frivolous posts, would you please extend me the same courtesy?
  • I'd like to see the 1895 Proof Morgan on the list...with the 93-S as honorable mention.
  • Just before New year I posted a contest thread of your greatest coin find of 2002. The winner was a a Fugio N. 104-FF, 'New Haven restrike' in gold. One of 3 known. This is a top coin and would be in my top 100.

Here is the thread with a picture

I also believe for fame and rarity the 1877 Indian head cent should be included.

This thread is kind of like torture to us serious coin junkies, albiet in a fun way. TDN posts a thread asking us to think big, but to limit the list count to a mere 10. I cheated and listed 20, but can probably list at least 20 more with minimal effort.

And, now, all I want is more coins...

    2. 1874-CC WA dime
    3. 1873-CC WA dime
    4. 1872-CC WA dime
    5. 1871-CC WA dime
    6. 1860-O dime
    7. 1846 dime
    8. 1844 dime
    9. 1859-S dime
    10. 1858-S dime

Shame on you EvillageProwler!!!!! That icon and the '73-CC NA only makes number 17 on your list. As Marge Simpson would say..."Ummmmmmmmmmmmmmmm....ummm...ummmm."

    8. 1844 dime

I am not a fan of the Little Orphan Annie dime. It is being hoarded in massive quantities; otherwise, it is only fairly scarce.

    My choices:

    1)1804 dollar
    2)1913 Liberty nickel
3)1861 Confederate half dollar (I suppose it's not technically a US coin, but close enough)
    4)1894-S dime
5)1915-S Pan-Pac octagonal fifty dollar commemorative (not all that rare, but so big and magnificent)
    6)1885 Trade dollar
7)1907 Extra high relief double eagle
    8)1870-S three dollar
9)1798 Small eagle half eagle (There are some tremendous rarities amongst half eagles, and it is probably not fair to only list one.)
    10)1876-CC Twenty cents

I think in reviewing everyones top 10 list, I now have about 35 coins on my top 10 list.

    A field of dreams.

How many people own one or more of their top 10? I believe TDN does, any others?

    keoj,

The half you're thinking about is the 1853-O no arrows & rays. True, it is extremely rare, but in sheer beauty it cannot compare to the with arr & rays variety. That is a true one year type that i'm proud to own image
