Which would you do?

nwcsnwcs Posts: 13,386 ✭✭✭
I've been thinking about this for a while... Which would you do, sell a lot of your decent (100-500 dollar) coins to get 1 really nice (2000-5000) coin or not?

What got me thinking was a bust dollar on Legend's website. If I sold all of my PCGS morgans, I'd have enough to buy it and maybe another 1000 coin. But then I'd have 2 coins instead of 20-30 morgans with rainbows, bright whites, and other colorations. Was curious what your tradeoff would be or if you wouldn't make it.

  • sell off the commons and get the rarities
  • like anything in life - diversification and minimization of risk never hurts.

too many eggs in one basket and all that jazz.

i would rather have one really great coin, then 50 or 100 of the common coins which thousands of other people have. i think you are on the right trackimage

Which will you like better? Which is easier to replace?

Stop going to Legends website image
  • If a crisis is to occur, god forbid, it's usually easier to get rid of a couple key date rare coins than it is to dispose of 20 to 30 common date morgans. They are also easier to trade to dealers because they can find more buyers for the keys. image

MORE coins is better. Just having 2 Morgans would really SUCK!!

Sometimes I end up kicking myself for finding such enjoyment in such an expensive hobby!

That is sort of what I'm doing right now, but a little different. I am selling off a bunch of coins that are $8-$50ish to buy coins that are $100-500ish. image

heck it would be fairly easy to replace the cheaper coins and to own a nice bust dollar is something special.

Like Mark Twain said, "Place all your eggs in one basket, and guard that basket".

    Get the rarity.
  • Without question, without doubt, without hesitation, without misgivings, without talking about it or thinking about it anymore, vow today to buy a very small number of super deluxe coins in stead of a large number of relatively common pieces.

    You will never regret it.

  • i've always been buying the best i could afford. as the years have passed, that best figure has grown, leaving me with numerous 'cheaper' coins that i wouldn't even consider buying nowadays, and as it turns out i can't sell them either since they've either declined or stayed at exactly the same price. oh well... so as a result i have ended up with a very varied collection.

  • I am doing what you are thinking about doing. Give me a nice ms68 morgan from the show I will go to in 3 weeks and I am going to be a happy camper (but if a few of those darn tarnished rainbow colored Morgans happen to get into my pocket while I am there then oh well).

I guess if you are a speculating for profit then the rarer coins. If you are just buying for enjoyment your 30 toned morgans might be better than one or two coins.
Some of my favorite coins are the lower value ones.

Well, the good thing is that I would still have lots of other coins. Most of my sellable coins are in Morgans/Peace though. So I would still have a varied collection. But I'm debating between investment, coolness factor, and other things. I do think of coins as being some type of investment, but also for enjoyment. So I've been thinking of a split strategy. Like where I would have most of my money in a few really good coins that would always be in demand and have circulated raw sets of other series and the occassional cool slab from a coin I just like.

I do appreciate the thoughts in this thread, though. Placid's advice about not going to Legend's website is probably the best! image
