This may restore (or shore up) your faith in coin dealers. Remember our counterfeit $3?

Here is the last discussion.

I filed a mediation complaint with the ANA after sending two letters (unanswered) to the dealer. Today, Paul Sims's manager wrote to me and the ANA, stating that we may send back the coin for a replacement or a refund!

I am sooo happy that I followed this through and didn't let it drop. I am very happy that a very old transaction can be made right, and that the dealer is doing the right thing.

Yippee!

Edited to add: Thank you one and all for all of your advice and support. I got some very good advice on this board, and would never have known I had recourse without all of you! THANKS!

Wonderful news! Are you going for the replacement?
  • Yes, I think a replacement is the way to go. This is one coin my dad bought that did go up in value. I will ask for an encapsulated coin, thankyouverymuch!

    CD,

That's fabulous. I read your story with great interest when the thread was initially posted, and admit I had doubts of your recovering any of the money. I think it is a credit to the dealer that he/she decided to do the right thing. I'm equally sure your Dad would be proud.

    Coindaughter,

If you opt for a refund, how much money will you get? If you get back the money at yesterday's price, then you may be better off getting a replacement coin.

  • EVP,
The details will have to be worked out. I assumed that a refund would be the price he paid, so that is why I'm thinking replacement would be better.
  • That's excellent news CD - couldn't have happened to a nicer person too - good lesson learned here!

    CD,

I'm glad it worked out, but the fact that it did only after going to the ANA is somewhat troubling. The dealer should have stepped up to the plate without that being necessary.

Fantastic. Make sure that puppy needs a signature when you send it image

I'm sorry, but this doesn't restore my faith. Paul Sims (SCUMBAG dealer) ignores you and only when you contact the ANA and he is FORCED to follow their rules does he do the right thing.

I'm sorry, but this just reinforces my opinion of a complete and total scumbag and a dealer to be avoided.

I'm glad it worked out, but the truth is that had you not known about the ANA mediation, you would have been SOL and I'm sure that is what Scumbag Sims is counting on. 99% wouldn't know about this mediation.

Sims shouldn't be praised. He should be shot.

I'll praise coindaughter's tenacity, and also those here who helped her out. It's a great example of what these boards can be.

Shame on the dealer who had to have his arm twisted; but if there's any consolation, he's probably mighty unhappy about having to eat the coin. I only hope you don't get a coin from a third-tier slabbing outfit.

New collectors, please educate yourself before spending money on coins; there are people who believe that using numismatic knowledge to rip the naïve is what this hobby is all about.

  • I agree with Greg. Paul Sims is the ACG of coin dealers. Unfortunately, his advertising preys on new collectors, and I'm guessing most of them won't realize they've been had for several years. And how many of them will manage to get a refund or replacement? Not too many I'm guessing.

Congratulations CD. It's great to hear all the effort paid off.

just grasping at straws but if heritage admited that an image of a coin they sold or auctioned wasn't a fair representation of a coin they auctioned, could they be held responsible for some kind of compensation by the a.n.a. by laws???
The President claims he didn't lie about taxes for those earning less then $250,000 a year with public mandated health insurance yet his own justice department has said they will use the right of the government to tax when the states appeals go to court.
  • COOL!

If you opt for replacement, take only pcgs or ngc graded coins, don`t settle for substandard slabs or a shamefully overgraded raw coin.
I agree with Greg, Syms deserves nothing but total avoidance.
A dealer once asked me if I noticed any three-legged buffalos on the bourse,to which I replied,"...no,but I saw alot of two-legged jackasses..."

Wow, congrats CoinDaughter! And not only on settling this one, but for coming quite a long way in the process. When you first joined these boards, I believe (if I remember correctly) you didn't know ANYTHING about coins except they were round and shiny. Way to go!
  • i agree with russ and greg, shouldn't have taken the ANA to make the deaelr do the right thing. I'm glad it worked out for you, CD.

Sims burned me for $50 when I started collecting in January with cleaned crap. The IHC was glowing orange. After 2 tries of sending coins back for exchanges, I gave up. Kept the silver stuff because it was cheap and gave it to a neighbor kid to get him started in collecting.

I was going to ask them to take me off their mailing list, but at 87 cents postage 2X per month, I figured I would soak them for $20 postage a year. They will eventually spend more on wasted postage than they burned me for a few coins.

Coindaughter - I have never seen Sims promote certified coins. As I recall, they claimed your Father's $3 was AU. Make 100% sure it is not cleaned. If they will not provide a PCGS/NGC/ANACS certified, tell them YOU are going to get it certified and it must be at least AU. Make them agree to refund grading fees and provide another coin if it does not properly grade. A lot of their stuff is cleaned. If you don't belong to PCGS Collector's club, I would be glad to organize the transaction for you (will cost about $60 for grading fees plus round-trip shipping & insurance).

I wouldn't push Sims too hard. It is possible that all they have to do is refund the money.

Or sell it to some other unsuspecting collector.

  • I just wanted to again express my thanks to and wonder at all of you peoples.

This experience really shows what terrific things can happen on the boards. I think this is its true essence: helping people. I am constantly amazed at the power of the internet.

I will post again when the deal is FINAL, and the real celebration can begin!
