Differences in grading incuse vs. standard minted coins

Are there any considerations that you take into account when grading an incuse coin vs regular minted coins?

  • Incuse coins are usually harder to grade because there is not as much protection in the fields like the normal coins. As a result, there is more wear. I at least find it is the hardest in the AU-50 to mS-63 range for those gold coins. Here is a good site overall for grading coins, and I don't know how much they bring up incuse coins though.

Very Interesting. What features do you rely upon for a grade assesment in these difficult grades?

  • I've never really understood why people have so much trouble grading the Pratt quarter and half eagle coins. AU's readily show because of luster loss on the fields, and for the lower grades you grade them the same as any other coin. By looking at the loss of detail on the high points of the devices. These coins are NOT incuse, the dvieces are raised but the high points are at the same level as the fields. As the coins circulate the high points on the design wear first just like on a regular coin. Luster on the fields disappears on them more quickly. But the luster on the devices stays longer. The only real differance is that the edges, lacking rims, tend to wear a litttle quicker and develop a rounding to them in lower grades.
