Reasonable time period for PCGS review of a coin?

coinguy1coinguy1 Posts: 13,484 ✭✭✭
What do you men and ladies think is a reasonable time period for PCGS to review a coin sent in for down-grade under their "guarantee resubmission"?

We sent a coin to Mr. Hall's attention because we felt it was / is overgraded and that the grade should be lowered. Before I start complaining publicly about it, I'd like to get some feedback on what might be considered a reasonable time period for such a review. Thank you for your feedback.

1 think 1 month real time is the max. So I guess 20 working days.

Mine was about three weeks turnaround time, but I should note that I was bugging Charlie just about every other day. I'm a pushy sucker.

Note #2: David Hall is up to his ass in alligators right now, so turnaround may be longer than normal.

  • I have a few coins in for grading review that have been at PCGS since the middle of November. Charlie told me earlier this week that they should be completed soon.

I don't know if it is the case, but I would think PCGS would give a priority to any resubmission that challenges PCGS' grading standards/consistency. The scenario you raise seems to have two elements that need to be considered. 1) is a downgrade appropriate and 2) if it is, what is the guarantee value? I would think the former ought to be answered within a week to 10 days of PCGS receiving the coin in question and that the latter might take a little longer depending upon the rarity and value of the individual coin. I would hope that PCGS could have a way of notifying the submitter of the status of each phase of the process.

Mark, is it possible that sending the item to Mr. Hall's attention might actually slow he process based upon his availability and schedule? Is this an acceptable trade-off for having the comfort of knowing he is personally involved?
Buy the coin...but be sure to pay for it.
  • I recently had submitted my first one and it took 6-7 weeks from the time they got it image They made me a very reasonable offer on the coin and I accepted. image Of course it's been three weeks now and no check yet............ image Hmmmmmm...........

Edited because I forgot to answer the question! *duh* Reasonable time frame? I would think they would want to handle a customer complaint (isn't that generally what a review would be?) as quickly as possible. I think reasonably four weeks tops - from the day they get the coin until the submitter has the coin and/or cash back in hand.

So, in other words, you feel PCGS acted unreasonable with your guarantee resubmission, right? I haven't heard of a single guarantee resubmission that met that time frame.

I think PCGS was more than genereous with their offer on my coin (and I was actually pleasantly surprised!). Like I said this was the first coin I have ever submitted for this type of service so I really didn't know what to expect for a time frame and hadn't even thought about it prior to sending it in. I do feel 6-7 weeks is too long (these are the same people that originally graded this coin in 10 seconds, right? image ). And I do realize this is a large company that does volumes of business but again wouldn't a grade review be an unhappy customer? Someone is already upset by a suspected inaccurate grade - do you want them stewing for another month and a half? And once a "solution" to the situation is agreed upon should it take another three weeks to cut a check? Just curious........ image

    10 working/business days or less..........

    unless there are unforseen circumstances
like work overload/vacations/holidays/etc then 15 working days or less

and if cant be done in 15 working days then a phone call/e mail as to specifically when this will be done!

Well, considering that you gave it to them LAST YEAR....... image

Now that I think about it, I have three submissions that have been in since LAST YEAR. What's the holdup?image

One or two coin submissions tend to go through a little quicker than larger invoices. I'd think for what you're talking about, about one month would be reasonable.

When I sent a coin to NGC for review (a $100.00 coin), it took three months. A tad long, but it all worked out for me.

..........if it's a coin you submitted and now you're sending it back they should complete it in whatever time/level it was originally submitted. otherwise it seems the regular service 30 day turnaround sounds reasonable.

edited for an afterthought-----there is so much complaining about turnaround times lately. submissions are high from what HRH says. maybe if everyone wasn't calling up for a status report and trying to move to the head of the line things would move quicker and more smoothly. i have an 8 coin submission in on economy #3037910 that they received 12/27/02. can someone tell me why i would need to check progress in less than 21 days?? i'm reminded of the joke about the anxious groom who needed to practice patience!! image

Is there a difference between a regrade and grade review?
If not I guess whatever service level you submit it under.
  • I agree the 30day time frame sounds okay

Thanks for the replies - I am going to continue to withhold further comment , for now.

RLinn - you asked "Mark, is it possible that sending the item to Mr. Hall's attention might actually slow he process based upon his availability and schedule? Is this an acceptable trade-off for having the comfort of knowing he is personally involved?"

Interesting / good questions! I don't know if sending the coin to David's attention will speed things up or slow them down. I had thought the former, since he seemed to be making an effort in the customer service department. As far as the tradeoff question - I can't answer that, as I don't know what the alternative to his personal involvement would have been - only that Rick M. wasn't going to be involved. image

Tom - you said "When I sent a coin to NGC for review (a $100.00 coin), it took three months. A tad long, but it all worked out for me"

My experiences with NGC have been much better / faster than that - typically a week or less.

Keets, you said "i have an 8 coin submission in on economy #3037910 that they received 12/27/02. can someone tell me why i would need to check progress in less than 21 days??'

With the new automated email notification system in place, I see no reason to call at all.

Placid, you asked "Is there a difference between a regrade and grade review?"

Officially, "regrade" is / should be used when someone is resubmitting for a higher grade. "Guarantee resubmission" is / should be used when someone thinks a coin is overgraded. "Grade review" as you put it, is not an official option, so I guess it is ambiguous enough to apply to a resubmission for either upgrade or downgrade?
