Problem with NGC slabs?

Does anybody else think the white insert distracts you while you look at a coin? I almost feel like it tries to reflect white into the coin. Just bothers me. I like the clear slabs much better.

For toned commemoratives, I love the white NGC holders. My only qualm is sometimes I feel the coins are more deeply recessed and "buried" in them than the PCGS holders.

    Clear also.
  • This might sound weird, but for the toned morgans I've been getting, I like the white background on them better. With white coins I prefer the clear plastic holder. I guess as long as they're accurately graded it really doesn't matter.

Copper looks much nicer in NGC slabs.

For toning, I like the NGC white slabs as well, but for blast white proofs or MS coins, the PCGS slab is nicer.

  • For the rainbow Morgans I collect nothing beats the neutral background of the NGC white holders.

For toned, the white slabs are great.
  • Yea guys I gotta say that NGC is missing the boat though by not putting gold coins and comms.in the old black holder.

Like ICG or not,Their black intercept shield looks awesome around a gold coin.

I buy only gold, I think the clear PCGS slab is much better looking with mint-state gold.

I prefer the clear holders also, but if I liekd a coin, I wouldn't not buy it because it was in a white holder.

I hadn't given it much thought. Although most of my certified coins are in the PCGS, with some ANACS and some NGC. Then there is a couple of coins in odd grading company holders. I guess if it is by majority I'd say clear.

I agree that blast red copper looks great framed by the white insert.

As a sidenote, I've also noticed some dealers -- particularly Heritage -- provide more consistent, brighter images of copper & gold when they're NGC. They seem to get more accurate white balance against that slab.

I agree that normally, I like the clear slabs, but for those toned coins, I think the white surroundings brings it out better.

I think the white NGC slabs overpower the coins, especially when it comes to small-sized coins such as 3-cent silvers. I much prefer the clear-style slab such as the ones used by PCGS and ICG. The NGC slabs remind me of bars of hotel soap.

Call me crazy, but I like the way coins look when they are sitting on a piece of velvet padding without the view being obstructed by plastic. You can even see the third side....the edge. Imagine that. Nothing but air between your eye and the coin....that's how it should be.

Toned coins look best in the NGC white holders.

I believe that NGC has the best holder in the industry now for all my coins, with PCGS a close second.

  • I've always thought it would be nice if NGC and ANACS let you choose between a black or white insert.

On the other hand, excluding dark, toned, gold, or white coins, I prefer the clear inserts.image

I think a black background for NGC slabs would be nice. But I'll find out as I'm almost ready to get my NGC submission number and send about 20-25 coins their way. Better price/turnaround time.
