1938-D Oregon Trail Commemorative PCGS MS68

This one is for auction at the B&M Rarities at FUN. The 1938-D is the most commonly found Oregon in a very high grade. I like the subtle toning with the original color and luster coming through.

Gorgeous.... and they did a nice job capturing it in the image. I love subtle toning as well and that's about as nice as it gets on an Oregon. Sea green is a beautiful color, and it blends so effortlessly with the gold and burnt red (sigh).

Okay, Mike, choose. Which do you take? You only get one.

The Heritage coin has been on my "must see" list at FUN since they posted their auction previews in November. The only coin I've ever regretted selling was an Oregon 37-D, and looking at these two is not helping me get over that!

Well, it's a tough choice, Mike. The subtle, pastel type of toning as opposed to the more dramatic grabber. I think if I picked one, I would be flip-flopping all week long as to which I would bid on.

I would have liked to see that 37-D, Paul. I think you should go after one of the 38-D's to help get over it.

Tough choice. The Heritage color coin is on lots of lists. It comes down to the one with the least hits, for me.

The 1938-D is the most commonly found Oregon in a very high grade.

While the 1938-D can be found in superb gem grade in quantity, the 1937-D far exceeds it in availability.

Clank -- I miss-typed that, mine was a 39-D. It was a white coin with nice patina, and can't compete with these two toned beauties. But it had an incredibly well defined strike and I was a fool to part with it. Was purchased from Pinnacle a few years ago so Mark might recognize it: link.

No way I can afford to do anything more than preview the FUN coin.
  • How much of a premium will the toning add to the 38-D? None, a little, a lot, the sky?

  • Greg I checked and you are correct. I should have said the 1938-D is one of the two most common Oregons found in a very high grade.

At one point there was one each of 37-D and 38-D in MS69. I don't know if this figure is still current.

As a point of information there are 14 coins in this series.

1st coin linked in this thread has a large gash on top toward the front of the wagon (rev.). would suggest a less-than-strong bid on that 1. i'd think 68 should lack such a comparatively large mark.

  • Karl, I think you are looking at part of the design, if you mean the vertical slash on the rib of the wagon's cover.
  • I LIKE number one alot. My dream is a blast white 37D in ms-67
