Have you ever NOT bid on a coin and asked yourself, what have I done?

As a corollary to braddick's post, I walked away from a gorgeous toned Liberty nickel twice, thinking it has a 50/50 chance of being AT'd. The third time I bought it. Recently I purchased it's twin. I've had a lot of pleasure in viewing it and sharing it with others. It always gets a WOW and from collectors about half the time, the inevitable question, is it AT'd? One that I did walk away from was a 1857 FE graded MS64 by PCGS. It was a well struck, lustrous coin that looked 65 to me. I could have had it for $875, but decided to sleep on it and come back on Sunday, the next day and of course it was sold. image

It does hurt, especially when you use the "watch this item" feature on Ebay and then see where
    it closed, ouch!!

or, "why didn't i bid enough"...

done it twice, once on the best struck 21 peace in pcgs 65, i stopped bidding at 2k and the next guy got it for 2100. second was on a toned 1861 25c in au that i refuse to allow myself to remember how little i could have gotten it for.

    aaarrrgghh.

Yes, especially at those auctions I can't attend and find out some great material was available. For me it was a 1864 L proof IHC offered at the Baltimore show/Penn. collection. Had I attended in person, it would be mine....still kick myself around the room regularly on that oneimage

I passed on a great pattern Morgan Dime in the Tree Many Feathers auction, as I was still a bit in shock after 9-11, and figured there was more to life than coins. It was a 65RD, if I recall correctly, and sold for somewhere in the $5.75k range. I subsequently realized there is NOT more to life than coins, and saw a 65RB in Heritage's LB auction. I gave up when it sold for over $8k. I still am kicking myself.

Happens all the time. I'll ditto the comment about using the 'watch this item' feature on EBAY and later learning it sold for well less than what I would have paid. And of course, inevitabley its impossible to find a similar example for anywhere near the price the missed on went for!

I quit using the watch it now feature. If I see a coin I like, I go to the snipe software and enter a max (for me) bid....it does the watching for me.

Yeah, I went to sleep on a coin and by the time I woke up the next morning Frank taught his cigar smoking dog to click on the BIN and *POOF* it was gone.

  • I have hestited a couple of times on BIN's of newly listed coins, only to go back an hour later and find they are gone. That always stirs those "missed the bus" feelings.

Ah....the BIN is another matter....if they have a good return policy and rating, it's no risk. I wouldn't hesitate to BIN and havhe done it many times. About 20% of the coins "stick".
