My coin budget for 2003 might be $0 :(

There are some things that I have just put off too long. I will have to cut out purchasing coins for about the next year or so. This will be tough!!! I will probably go through withdrawals for a time.

I am purchasing the key date for the proof Barber quarter series, a beautiful, brilliant 1915 PCGS PR66 and that will be the last coin for a while. This coin marks 50% completion on my Registry set; I guess that's a good place to take a sabbatical from coin collecting. It will give me something to look forward to when I return.

Will I be OK? Can I still lurk about the forums or will it make me sad when someone gloats about some cool coin that he/she purchased?

OldCam do you have any bad stuff (or what you would consider bad) that you could sell to buy new good stuff?

That may be one way of keeping an eye open for something special!

Oldcameoproofsguy.... I for one have taken breaks from collecting, only to come back and get into more expensive coins. But you have been buying the expensive ones. Maybe take a break from the registry game. You can still pick up some decent coins and have fun.

Whatever you decide I wish you the best and keep in contact.
You said you have been putting other things off for too long? Must be getting married or something.image

You could just get a new handle like "newcameoproofsguy"and feed the coin need with some $10-$15 Deepcam moderns untill you get back to working on the high dollar set.image

My budget is also going to be light this coming year. Have to learn some coin discipline. image But I'm going to buy a few books, go to the grading class in March (Charlotte), and go to coin shows to learn (and not bring money lest I fall into temptation). Most of my purchases will be at that Charlotte show but then it's less for the rest of the year. This old house needs some fixin' up and I ain't the man to do the job. image

Just taking a break from buying coins shouldn't mean you can't participate in the hobby for a year. You already have some great coins you can enjoy and study, you can go to shows and keep current on what's available and maintain your contacts, you can get a new book or two and learn some more, you can participate here and share what you know with other members.

I know a lot of the fun is in the hunt, but you should find pleasure in what you've already acquired, too. image

New collectors, please educate yourself before spending money on coins; there are people who believe that using numismatic knowledge to rip the naïve is what this hobby is all about.

  • While on your sabbatical from buying more proof Barbers for your registry set, why not start a circulated set of Barber quarters or half dollars? It can be a real challenge to complete a circulated set of either of these two series in VG or better and the cost is reasonable. This will also keep you circulating at shows and your local dealers.

While taking breaks from adding to my Morgan collection, I'm trying to complete a circulated Barber half collection in VG or better. It can be very difficult to find original uncleaned halfs. As an added bonus I picked up an old used half dollar album for a $1.00. The set is over 50% complete and looks great in the old album.

Another suggestion: Get involved with Civil War Tokens. You can join the Society for $10 per year. Most tokens in average circulated grades are under $20. You get a lot of history, a chance to study die states, planchet materials and manufacturers all while building a link to one of the most interesting periods in this country's history.

oldcameoproofsguy that's good news because collectors like you & stman make me pay more $$ for my coins because you guys don't buy the junky stuff.
Go ahead and take all the time off you need! image

Well thanks big Dog, I'll take that as a compliment. But for now I'm not taking too much time off. Seen any nice not so pretty "original Barbers lately? Or you don't want to tell me.image

Yeah I think I'm looking @ ½ the Barber mintage right now in PCGS & NGC slabs. Everything is blast white with white spots and brown peripheral dip tone, hell some of the coins are completely gold from it and everytime I click on the enlarged pictures I see Proof 66 dcams that look the cops used it to take a crook's fingerprints. The original stuff I'm not even being nice and calling it non-lovely like I usually do. It's just plain butt assed disgusting. I've seen better looking stuff in ACG holders.

I'm not sure of your coin holdings, but I have another idea for you -

Take 3 or 4 of your coins to a show and see if you can get any dealers willing to do a swap -

assuming they have anything that interests you at all

At least you would be able to talk coins with them.
  • stmanstman Posts: 11,352 ✭✭✭✭✭
Hey Dog, Glad to hear there are plenty of blast white Barbers out there. Because someone told me that toned coins are overpriced and overrated, so I think I'll go for the white ones now. What do you think good idea?

Ok. Stman. You asked for it!

So here's you a nice penny: Did you know Heritage hired Bondman from eBay to make the scans?

Here's a nice dime: Enlarge it but don't let the prints jump on you.

An even mo better MS dime: Rainbow toned BIG BUCKS

    Something from eBay: Yuck Quarter

I like $15,000 Halves: Especially with white spots and a print at the top

I like Proof Morgans: Especially ones that look like fungus amungus

Dog, ROFL!!!! Okay okay, now that you made me lose my dinner. Is it your point to stay away from your 97 date? If so point taken.

Those are really nasty, that quarter and how about the pr66 Morgan? Yea I'll buy the holder for sure.

Just buy them for the grade # on the slab. It should really raise the points of your Registry Set.
