A Little "Modernista" Eye Candy - Close up pics of toning detail posted - Give us your tho

But they deserve to be large, as they are pretty awesome - these belong to my buddy "FiveCents" from the board who had these lying around at his place, so I asked him to let me picture them for us. Your thoughts will be appreciated! And no - he doesn't clean, wash windows - AND HE CERTAINLY DOESN'T COOK! image

    Frank,

Since they're moderns, they are without merit.

Great colors. The big silvers, classic and modern are what the Fatman loves to collect.
  • That commem is cool. I like the color on the 87 Eagle obverse and the 89 Eagle reverse too, can you make me one with those combined? image

Somebody needs to keep their fingers off those poor things though.
  • I can hear it now ... "banker, Salt Lake City, giveaway, mystery ....".

1986 on the bottom appears very questionable, the others only appear as somewhat questionable ... ok, maybe the 1986 & 1987 look good ...

I too questioned the bottom one - but then I took a look at the detail as shown in the two pictures below, and I gotta tell you - you'd have to be a damn good doctor to pull this off! What do you think?

had these lying around at his place

Tell me more i am curious about the conditions of how they were laying around? In a box, climate, near a vent or heating duct? The 86 on the bottom almost looks like it was in contact with a source of Heat for a long time the others look natural except for the finger prints.

Love the toning. SAEs are great, and while there still young for a coat of color, I have found several that were in my fathers collection that toned nicely.

MrKelso: They were stored in a small jewelry box with a cotton ball packing. This was kept in a paper grocery bag on a closet shelf. I hypothysize that the chemicals in the paper of the jewelry box or cotton off gas to interact with the metal surface of the coin. You end up with a an accelerated tone (aT not AT). Additionally, the same box contained a SAE of the same date that was in a soft plastic flip, that coin did not tone. aT, its a good thing.

  • Need to remember that ASEs are .999 silver, not .90 silver like other US coins. Silver Eagles will tone much faster. A silver eagle not kept in a flip or airtight will show signs of toning within weeks. After only 3 or 4 months any openly exposed surface will likely be completely toned. Not an expert but these look natural to me. A true Doctor would have been more careful with the fingerprints. IMHO

Thank you They turned out rather nice for such a short time.

  • Guys - just for the record, the coins MEOS1 was talking about were not these coins. I don't know in what condition these coins were kept, but they just are what they are - the owner will be sending the ASE's for grading, and I really believe that if they stick to the diagnostics, that they'll make it into slabs. We'll let you know!

I really like the Eagle on the bottom! It looks like a PCGS Morgan I have PCGS Morgan. Of course neither my Morg nor the Eagle is ORIGINAL because they both got that way from an album or holder. image
Change that we can believe in is that change which is 90% silver.
  • Let's dust and compare the fingerprints on the Morgan and the ASE, we may find a link here ...
