    Mark,

I asked last year if PCGS would periodically invite a guest. I'm sure they don't want to become content providers, but I'm also sure a few numismatic guests couldn't hurt PCGS's market share. I'd love to hear from some of the folks at the mint, perhaps an engraver, a designer, series expert, etc. Here's hoping.image

  • Wow, that's a pretty broad topic, and takes a little bit of thought. But, I am going to go with my gut reaction here and say that there is much about the forum that I like as it is, and do not feel a need for sweeping changes.

I think a lot of things that happen on the forum happen and grow out of a need at the time. And those things that are needed probably will present themselves on their own timetable. If that makes any sense. In other words, I don't see a reason to actively try to restructure or renovate the basic model at this time.

The one thing I would always like to see on this board is tolerance.
Tolerance from the serious numismatists for those who are more hobbists, and seeking diversion and enjoyment. Tolerance from those who may have a very, very set in stone vision of what they think is right. Tolerance for different people, different types of threads, for the newbies, the oldbies, the wannabies, and whatever b's you may sees.

I guess one thing I believe in strongly here: this is a public forum. Room for all. Threads for all.

I'd like to see quicker moderators to delete all the off topic threads. The worts are the ones that say "off topic" in the subject. We have an Open Forum for that stuff.

Less "Look at this eBay auction".

Less messages that could have been done in a PM or email.

    Less talk about state quarters.

A new forum for semi-coin stuff: S&H questions, software, eBay questions, etc.

I would also like to see more guest speakers and more tollerance.
I also agree that the non-numismatic topics should not appear here.

  • Overall I am very happy with the boards as is. Everything seems to balance out quite well. The submission results I find to be fun, as I know how exciting it is for collectors to share their results with someone else. I like all the guess the grade posts. My favorite posts are some of the ones where diagnostics for particular coins are given.

I would like to see more coins pictured and debated so we all can learn from them.

Oh ya, I am getting kind of attached to Clankeye's Good Morning Class Threads now that I have had a starring role, and think that the twice a week plan would be great if it fits into his schedule.image

  • As always, I like the way you think coinguy1.

Suggestions? Ideas? Wishes? - I like to see, and maybe not specifically posted to the forums, but something like this site http://home1.gte.net/res05izg/index.htm for at least the most commonly collected coins.

Theme/topic for a day or for a week? These do seem to go over well in this forum. I like to hear from some of the veteran collectors, like the ones that have been collecting for 20 or 30 or 40+ years, telling stories about their collecting or terminology or lingo that isn`t being used today.

Guest posters? I like this one. I don`t have any ideas who could be a guest poster but, I like the idea.

Theme/ topic for a day or for a week? No
New or different features? Able to electrocute trolls by remote control keyboards

Keep it just the way it is? Obviously, this is the only recourse

Whenever I see comments like this I always think "then try changing it. Start the type of threads you'd like to read." I can not believe that with the sheer number of threads offered here on any given day, you have to be driven off by ones you have no interest in, rather than looking for, or starting ones that you do.
It's not just falling off a log around here. If you want good, challenging material, then put some effort forth to present some. And I'm not talking to you personally, JP. This is just my feeling in general.

I want to see more of everything (within the perameters of numismatics and associated activities).

Show me pictures of your personal collections. Write lessons to go with them. Teach me. Tell me the history of the coin and the times. Show me why I should collect your series too. I will do the same.

Run Q&A on you field of expertise.

Tell me why a coin gets a certain grade, not just what the grade is.

Share with me who the good dealers are. Tell me about the bad dealers before I get burned.

Tell me what shows you are going to attend so I can meet you. Show me how to get the most out of attending. I'll buy the beer.
Tell me about the good book you just read. Where I can get one. Why it is better than others.

Share with me the member's handle when you use his/her personal name. Without the references it can make your posts difficult to follow for new members.

Share with me your different point of views utilizing good debating skills, not good debasing skills. Accept my point of view as what it is "my opinion".

I do not want to see less of anything.

Every post is of interest for someone. It may be only 1 or 2 people but for them the post is important. If you don't like a post, just move on. Stating that this doesn't belong here, or this has been discussed before, or this is stupid, is not necessary. Please just move on. It will go away soon if it has no interest.I echo Clankeye when I say Please be more tolerant of everyone. This is an amazing exercise in the human experience. Hundreds of people, most total strangers, brought together by a common interest, taking the time share their ideas, knowledge, questions, and yes, friendships. (That may be the worst sentence I have written on this forum, so please be tolerent.) We all have different backgrounds, all have differing levels of expertise but I believe we all have the same goal. To Enjoy the Coins We Collect.

I wish everyone a very Merry Christmas (Holiday Season) and a Happy 2003.imageimage

What would you like to see more of?
    Coin stuff.

    Less of ?
    OT bs.

I like the eBay posts because we all do a lot of stuff on eBay and eBay is a big part of our collecting hobby. You can learn a lot about coins from what goes on on eBay.

The board needs a moderator to kick the ot bs and the troublemakers who disrupt the forum.
Change that we can believe in is that change which is 90% silver.

i would like to see some theme topics! also more coin realted posts rather than the usual nonsense narishkite threads!!

and guest posters and that debate thing sounds great!!!!

i would also like someone who has an area of specialization say someone thast doesnot come on here like for instance

have rick tomaska come on here and taslk about why he likes deep cameo proof coins pre 1915 and what he thinks of them as per specific questions from board members like specific dates series etc

or kagin comimg on here talkingf about territorals which coins are good buys now all opinions but seriousd opinions from specialists or anything related to territorals !

or someone come on here that specializes in ms seated coinage or lib nicks and talking about specific lib nickel questions from board members and discussing it

etc etc or one of the top promoters or wholesalers talking in general of the market and waht it is right now or where it might be going?

I've been a "collector" (hoarder according to Russ, he he) for two years and a member for a year. I've learned more here than I could attending every coin class offered - all free. For me, this place is an important part of my continuing education. Ebays are fine - how many frauds have we caught. Off-topics are ok "my roof just blew off" "I'm going in for surgery tomorrow" I'm leaving for a trip to Europe" - these would get lost in the open forum. As we get a broader base this place wil evolve into whatever we make of it. I keep looking forward to the good, the bad and even the ugly. (P.S. We should think about sending Clankeye money so he can quit his job and devote more time to his upcoming chapters.)

  • A quick point. Philly Joe said about certain OT threads--

<< <i>these would get lost in the open forum >>

There is truth to that, and another thing to consider is, the Open Forum is practically a world of it's own. It has a different feel than this forum, different rules of engagment, and it strikes me as almost more of a private club... I go there occasionally, but I almost feel like an intruder. That is not a put down of the open forum- merely an observation.

I put most of my eggs into this one basket. The coin forum. And if something dramatic happened to me, even outside of coins, this is probably where I would want to share it. Is there a limit to that? Sure, and there should be. But, I don't mind at all when someone starts a thread around here that reveals a part of their personality other than coins. It fills that person out for me.

There are posters here, who I know absolutely nothing about except that they make cryptic, short comments usually buried in the middle of of some thread. That's fine, as I said before, it's a public forum, use it to your comfort level. But, I like getting to know more about the people here. And if an occasional OT thread appears, than so be it.

Fatman-- that was a really good post. Registrycoin and Philly Joe-- thanks very much.

I use to be against the idea since I thought many good topics would be missed, but it's time to start opening new forum subgroups. There's a difference between tolorence and patience, and I find myself losing the latter trying to find coin related topics before they get buried.

I'd like to see a copper forum, for example. Indian cent posters seem to have slowly vanished over recent weeks -- there were few to begin with -- and I find myself posting less as well. Copper discussions may draw them back if centrally located, and the rest of you wouldn't have to weed through them. Good cases could be made for other new forums as well.
  • Shylock--
I would have no problem at all with something like a copper forum. I think it is a good idea. I must confess to being kind of stunned you would indicate that there don't seem to be a lot of threads for Indian head collectors around here. As far as a sub-group I've always thought you nutty Indianhead dudes, were about as visible as they come! If there has been a slow down in postings lately, I would attribute that to the holidays and not much more.
But, yes some sub forums might be good. Because I think it is important that the advanced collectors have a place to go and discuss and feel they can have an uniterrupted serious conversation about their interests. Absolutely. And Merry Christmas to all reading this thread.

  • I would like to see PCGS post more about their grading standards and the slight variance between grades like MS66/MS67 MS67/MS68 etc.

Pick a different series each week and post a couple of pic's in different grades. Then explain WHY each coin was graded the way that it was.

Fatman, Clank, great posts. JMoore, that's a real good idea. I'd love to see DHall take one submission a week and discuss the coin, and why it received the grade it did. That would make great conversation. I wouldn't mind one of my coins being discussed (not that many are worth discussing), and I'm sure most submitters wouldn't, especially if the thought process that went into the PCGS grade was illuminated. I hope Mr.Hall hears your idea.image

Instead of discussing a single coin (which may be hard to do), discuss a series in general. What it takes to get certain grades, what the graders look for etc. Perhaps why certain dates in a series may be graded differently (striking quality etc).

This would certainly be educational for all, especially when a series one collected was talked about. May change the way you look at coins from other series too.

    Love D. Heath's idea.

Along those lines it would be interesting to have members/dealers discuss pricing of a particular coin. I find pricing as difficult as grading esp. for coins that are not commodity priced. Eg. nicely toned, or very clean or nicely toned but some strike weakness etc. Pricing of rarities would be interesting as well.

How about PCGS forum shirts for members in over a year or 500 posts. This way we can spot each other at coin shows.

Also, how about a free PCGS coin giveaway (by PCGS) to those who are elected forum member of the month. The criteria could be based on knowlegable help and commentary on the boards.
