Christmas numismatic traditions?

I am wondering if anyone else has a Christmas numismatic tradition beside me. Every Christmas time, I bring home from my safety deposit box whatever set I happen to be working most diligently upon. Then on Christmas eve, I lay out the coins in order on the dining room. I admire the set and dream of filling the holes in it. Then I have my family gather around to look at the set. So, for instance, some time ago when I was trying to finish my 1936-1942 run of proof sets, there were three years during which I laid out the coins in date order and had my wife and kids look at them. While I don't think they appreciated the coins as much as I, nonetheless it was an opportunity to try to show my kids (and wife) why I collect. I finished that set a couple of years ago. So this year I will lay out my clad dime set and invite (= force) my family to look at them.

Anyway, does anyone else have some sort of Christmas tradition built around numismatics?

Every year the kids get coins for gifts. The kids don't collect, even though I have tried to get them interested. I missed one year because I thought they didn't want coins and both were totally disappointed, so now the tradition continues--both kids will get coins for Christmas this year.image

  • I buy two additional silver proof sets every year and use them as stocking stuffers for my son (13) and daughter (16). They of course act like its just another dumb gift from Dad but they do have them prominently displayed in their rooms.

The other day I chuckled as I was doing some "honey do's" outside my daughters bedroom. My daughter had a friend over and I heard the friend say "What are these". My daughter went on a five minute informative lesson on proof sets with her friend. I guess some of this is rubbing off after all.

Since the inception of the statehood quarters, I have been giving colleagues statehood quarter
boards for Christmas at work. At this point they expect it and also share it with their children and
families. There are thirty people in my department, imagine how many collectors I've created? Even
    one is worth it.

    Happy Holidays,
    Brian.
