Guess the grade: PLEASE!

nwcsnwcs Posts: 13,386 ✭✭✭
I'm not good at guessing a grade on a Morgan like this. I've got larger pictures, but nowhere to put them. If someone is willing to host them, I can e-mail larger pictures. What do you think this grades? Should I submit it regardless? I know I got a good deal because I paid $28 for it. Don't worry about the gunk on the rev. I've been soaking this in acetone and it's coming off splendidly.

Thanks,

Neil

First let me qualify--I am not, nor profess to be an knowledgeable in Morgans.
I think the marks on the cheek are going to keep this coin in the 61 or 62 range.

But would the cheek marks (the white area is an old fingerprint) and neck marks drop the grade more? The luster in the fields doesn't show any wear, but the cheek and neck make me curious.

If it’s got luster under the toning and in the white areas, I’d say MS-64. It might get in an MS-65 holder. The marks on the cheek in neck would have taken it out of 65 territory in the past, but today????!!!

The toning is the wildcard. Sometimes you see beautifully toned MS-64 coins get in 65 holders or more, even if the marks don't warrant the grade.

I will guess au58 but because of the color pcgs would probaby give it ms62.

Well, the luster is full on both sides, and the marks are hidden by the toning meaning the marks are older. I guess for me the question is whether it is AU-58 or a MS grade. I know that for a coin like this the grade doesn't sell it like the toning would (if I ever ever chose to sell it) but I'm interested in how this grades first before toning.

It does not matter the grade if you can get it in a holder with that toning.. you got yourself a money coin

Yeah, I'm curious how a professional would grade it. Now, I want to say I have no intention of selling this coin so this is for my curiosity only... Does anyone know how much a coin like this would go for? I especially want to know for when I submit so I can get it insured correctly.

    Thanks,

The print won't hurt the grade any buy that dig on the neck is really severe and 1 or 2 on the cheek is deep so it is a 62.
Even though it is pretty the tone won't help the grade THAT MUCH, maybe 63 max but I wouldn't bet on that.

Are you serious, Placid? I was thinking around the $100-150 range!

    Placid,

The 1901 dollar you have pictured is an MS-64 that has been dipped to the point where its luster is shot. Mark wise it's an MS-64 or maybe even a low end 65. BUT the luster is caput.

I actually see traces of wear and not sure if the breast/wing feathers are typical MS ... AU58 ??

    nicely toned Morgan,nwcs...
The acetone is not doing anything to the tone colors is it? i've always wondered about this...
i would question whether this piece is MS or au by the lack of feathers on the breast...could be just a typical weakly struck 1900 though...
if MS,should be at least 63...

    And the right prices.

    63 $36 $35 $29 $33 $30 - $35
    64 $55 $49 $41 $52 $35 - $45
    65 $200 $165 $132 $170 $115 - $145

This is one of those times I wish I had a VAM book. I don't know what is typical for this year/mint in terms of strike. The acetone doesn't impair the coin in any way (thankfully!). I've had it in acetone for a couple hours and the color is just the same as it was when I put it in. image

Because the color is the desirable type, I wonder if it would technically grade AU58 but NGC and PCGS would grade it MS-61 or 62?
  • Dog97Dog97 Posts: 7,874 ✭✭✭
It has no wear, just weak strike and will be properly graded by PCGS as 62/63.

you might get MS 60 on this one but the neck and face distractions coupled with the smooth breast feathers are problems for this one. I can't tell if the breast is the result of a weak strike or wear.

    I'd grade it MS60 purty.
