I don't recall having seen any '64 proof sets coming in hard plastic either. Maybe I'll have to unleash some of my "unopened" '64 sets that I opened. They all look just about as good.
First it was fairly newbie bidding, then WHAM. Bidder must think they see something there. I actually have one of these proof sets buried in a safe deposit box somewhere, haven't looked at it in years. Bothers me a little that my state treasurer has an ebay account for "official" use only.

The Philadelphia Mint: making coins since 1792. We make money by making money. Now in our 225th year thanks to no competition.
All the high bidder and the shades are doing is following the State of Pennsylvania auctions. They are bidding against each other with absolutely no clue as to the actual value of the set lol. I bet they don't even look at the coin category at all.
I used to RIP all kinds of Cherries from Pa.`s Treasury Vaults when they had traditional auctions( before they discovered ebay ).Now, I check out their auctions once in awhile and shake my head in disbelief! How can there be so many Rubes out there? The ultimate sales gimmick, and it`s all legit., check out their feedback!
A dealer once asked me if I noticed any three-legged buffalos on the bourse,to which I replied,"...no,but I saw alot of two-legged jackasses..."
In 1964 these sets got to as high as $35.00 retail. Of course that was in 1964 dollars, which more than $100 in today's dollars.
Still this set is out of the original mint package, and unless that is one heck of a cameo in there, the buyers are buried for life and probably their children's lives.
By hey the bought it from the government so it must be a fair deal ... right?
Retired dealer and avid collector of U.S. type coins, 19th century presidential campaign medalets and selected medals. In recent years I have been working on a set of British coins - at least one coin from each king or queen who issued pieces that are collectible. I am also collecting at least one coin for each Roman emperor from Julius Caesar to ... ?
